West Mesquite picks up thrilling OT win thanks to goal-line stand

Wylie's gamble on two-point conversion doesn't pay off in OT

It’s a term usually reserved for the playoffs, but it’s what West Mesquite did Friday night: survive and advance.

SportsDay’s top-ranked Class 4A team stuffed Wylie on a two-point conversation in overtime to secure a 34-33 victory at Mesquite Memorial Stadium.

In overtime West Mesquite quarterback Chason Virgil hit Xavier Young on a pass up the middle on the first play. Preston Burnett responded for the Pirates by punching it in from the goal line. After an offside penalty moved the extra-point attempt from the 2-yard line to the 1. Wylie coach Bill Howard sent out his offense.

Wylie gave the ball to Burnett again, but West Mesquite’s Kameron Miles stopped him at the goal line, and his teammates piled on to complete the game-saving stop.

“When I saw the pads, I had to pull him down,” Miles said. “I cannot let him score. … I’m just proud of my team. We [fought]. We saw who got heart.”

The Wranglers took a 21-6 lead after scoring late in the half and early in the third quarter. But Wylie, which had struggled with West Mesquite’s defense for most of the first half, found its rhythm just in time. Down by 14 in the fourth quarter, Pirates sophomore quarterback Carsen Cook led two consecutive touchdown drives, with the game-tying touchdown coming with 43 seconds remaining.

“We were cramping up, and [had] guys coming off and on especially in the second half,” West Mesquite coach Mike Overton said. “Our guys were just resilient. … When we had to have that big play at the end, we got it.”

Cook finished the day 24-of-44 for 251 yards and one touchdown.
