Jet Tuma fuels Highland Park to first win of season
Senior quarterback tallies 266 all-purpose yards in victory
UNIVERSITY PARK — Jet Tuma threw for 223 yards and a touchdown and accounted for 266 all-purpose yards to lead Highland Park to a 34-23 non-district win over Monterrey Tech at Highlander Stadium. The win allows Highland Park to avert losing consecutive games in the same season for the first time since 1995.
Monterrey Tech (1-1), who won at Stephenville last week, scored first on a 39-yard field goal by Adrian Lamothe. But Highland Park (1-1) scored the next 24 points, all in the second quarter, as its defense stiffened while its offense got into rhythm. Highland Park held Monterrey Tech to three first downs and without a conversion on seven third-down plays in the first half.
Highland Park’s defense turned the game around with 6:43 left in the second quarter when Boomer Bakich returned an interception 27 yards for a touchdown.
Tuma started the game 13-of-15 for 193 yards passing and struck quickly after Highland Park stopped Monterrey Tech on a three-and-out following the interception. Tuma hit Anthony Vallera in stride on a 73-yard completion on first down to extend Highland Park’s lead to 21-3. Vallera finished with 104 receiving yards.
In the second half, Hank Howard and Tuma tallied Highland Park’s running game to a combined 94 yards and a touchdown.
Monterrey Tech scored 20 points in the final 57 seconds on an eight-play drive, then recovering two onsides kicks to set up 46- and 16-yard touchdown passes. Alfredo Rodriguez entered at quarterback for Monterrey Tech in the fourth quarter with Highland Park leading 34-3 and led Monterrey Tech with 96 passing yards. Monterrey Tech completed passes to 10 different receivers.
