5A-4A roundup (Zero Week): Ryan rallies big to overtake Corsicana, 40-28; West Mesquite crushes Rockwall
DENTON — Denton Ryan, jumping from Class 4A to 5A this season, rallied from a 22-3 halftime deficit to outscore Corsicana, 37-6, in the final two quarters at C.H. Collins Stadium on Friday night. Quarterback Mitchell Bridges finished with 99 yards and two touchdowns rushing to go with 176 yards and a score passing.
After stopping the Tigers on fourth down, Ryan looked poised to put the game on ice when it scored on a Bridges touchdown run, making the score 31-22. Ryan then stopped Corsicana on fourth down and reclaimed the ball with less than 10 minutes remaining. But a bad exchange between Bridges and running back A.J. Alexander led to a Corsicana fumble recovery, which defensive back Kaley Washington returned for a touchdown, making the score 31-28.
West Mesquite 43, Rockwall 17
ROCKWALL — Sophomore quarterback Chason Virgil rolled up 361 yards of offense and four touchdowns as Class 4A West Mesquite routed Class 5A Rockwall at Wilkerson-Sanders Stadium.
Virgil led West Mesquite, No. 3 in SportsDay’s Class 4A area rankings, to touchdowns on four of its first five possessions and a 28-3 halftime lead. He opened the scoring with a 33-yard keeper and then passed for the next three touchdowns, including 31- and 54-yard scores to William Stanley. Virgil had 311 yards on 20-of-28 passing and 50 yards rushing.
McKinney 55, Mansfield Legacy 46
MANSFIELD — Quarterback Robert Somborn led McKinney to a wild victory over Mansfield Legacy at R.L. Anderson Stadium.
Somborn completed 16 of 26 passes for 241 yards and four touchdowns, including two touchdown passes apiece to TV Williams and Connor Fuentes. Tommy Candela had 202 yards and two touchdowns rushing, and Jonathon Shannon contributed 138 yards rushing and two touchdowns.
Midlothian 42, Waxahachie 7
MIDLOTHIAN — Midlothian carried a 14-0 lead into the fourth quarter before scoring four touchdowns. Three of those scores came after Waxahachie turnovers, including a 26-yard interception return by Phillip Smith. Quarterback Boyce Fausett ran for two touchdowns and threw for two more for Midlothian.
Mansfield Timberview 27, Mansfield Summit 13
MANSFIELD — Mansfield Timberview outlasted Mansfield Summit as quarterback Avery Gilbert rushed for 92 yards and a touchdown and threw for another score.
Junior linebacker Brandon Garner intercepted Summit quarterback Antonio Bennett on the first drive of the game and took it 52 yards for an early lead. Garner had his second interception on the next sequence, halting a Summit drive at the Timberview 41.
Arlington Sam Houston 32, Fort Worth O.D.Wyatt 30
FORT WORTH — Arlington Sam Houston scored the winning touchdown on a 5-yard run by Daylan Woods with 5:49 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Fort Worth Boswell 43, Haltom 17
FORT WORTH —Quarterback Zach Files threw for 311 yards and four touchdowns as Fort Worth Boswell outscored Haltom, 30-0, in the second half for a comeback victory at Pioneer Stadium.
Sachse 44, Wylie 36
GARLAND — Sachse rallied from a 28-23 halftime deficit to overtake Wylie in overtime.
Prosper 39, Keller 21
PROSPER — Marquez Houston rushed for 106 yards on 10 carries and a touchdown as Prosper topped Keller for its first win in 4A.
The teams combined for seven scores in the first quarter, which ended with Prosper leading, 32-14.
TC Byron Nelson 21, Keller Timber Creek 7
JUSTIN — Trophy Club Nelson defeated Keller Timber Creek at Northwest ISD Stadium.
