MURPHY — Senior receiver Collin Shaw caught three touchdown passes in a little over five minutes in the second quarter to spark Plano East’s come-from-behind, 35-20 victory over Garland in the season opener for both teams.
The passes from Mario Smalls covered 27, 50 and 20 yards and came after Garland grabbed a 13-0 lead in the first quarter.
The second score came on a double-reverse flea-flicker on the first play following an East interception by Austin Corbett.
Shaw finished with eight catches for 174 yards, and Smalls completed 13 of 20 passes for 212 yards.
East finished its first-half scoring on Jameal Hampton’s 77-yard return of a blocked Garland field goal.
The first quarter was all Garland, as Jalen Evans scored first on a 7-yard pass from V.J. Gates and Jaharrad Haskins added a 4-yard run. Garland outgained East 173-79 in that first quarter. For the game, Garland held nearly a 250-yard edge over East, but East took advantage of miscues in Garland’s passing and kicking games to take control of the game in the second quarter.

GARLAND — Garland Lakeview used a second-half surge to pull away from Carter at Homer B. Johnson Stadium to give new coach Kendal Miller a win.
Carter struck first to take a 7-0 lead in the second quarter when Kenneth Spencer tossed an 18-yard pass to Kenneth Gray on a fade route to the corner of the end zone.
Lakeview answered with a five-play scoring drive to cut the lead to 7-6 on a 12-yard touchdown run by DeMarcus Hall, who finished with 92 yards rushing.
Lakeview found its offensive rhythm in the second half as SMU pledge Jarvis Baxter hauled in a pair of touchdown catches, including a scoring grab where he outleaped a couple of Carter defenders to put the game away for good.
Carter had plenty of chances to score, but turnovers proved costly as Carter gave the ball away three times in the red zone. Spencer passed for 271 yards, but his night was cut short when he was ejected for unsportsmanlike conduct late in the third quarter.

IRVING — Sophomore quarterback Jimmy Clark passed for 170 yards and two scores as Irving Nimitz routed North Garland at Irving Schools Stadium.
The yardage was even, but North Garland committed four costly fumbles.
Nimitz opened the game with a 10-play, 82 yard drive and went ahead 7-0 with 8:39 remaining in the first quarter when Clark passed 14 yards to Gabe Castillo. Clark completed six of seven passes for 68 yards.
Nimitz started its third series of the first quarter at the North Garland 28-yard line. Seven plays later Mike Hernandez scored on a 3-yard run to make it 14-0 with 57 seconds in the first quarter.

CORINTH — Marshall Dominy accounted for three touchdowns, two passing and one rushing, to help engineer a comeback victory for Lake Dallas at Falcon Stadium.
Dominy, who completed seven of 16 passes for 86 yards and rushed for 42 yards on 12 carries, helped Lake Dallas (1-0) overcome a 13-point first-half deficit by scoring 24 consecutive points. Tony Green added 118 yards and another touchdown rushing for Lake Dallas, which advanced to the Class 4A Division II Region I semifinals last season.
J.R. Griffin led the offense for Pearce (0-1) by gaining 62 yards on five receptions while also compiling 38 yards rushing. Rhett Svetgoff threw for 95 yards and a touchdown.
When Aaron Ross returned an interception 35 yards for a touchdown less than four minutes into the second quarter, Pearce appeared to be in control with a 20-7 lead, but Lake Dallas scored 17 points over the final 3:15 of the first half, including touchdowns 35 seconds apart, to surge ahead.
A 25-yard field goal by Logan Stewart cut Pearce’s lead to 20-10 with 3:15 remaining in the half. On Pearce’s first play from scrimmage after that, Lake Dallas’ Roman Mitchell scooped up a fumble and returned it 20 yards to the Pearce 23-yard line, and five plays later, Dominy sneaked across the goal line for a 1-yard touchdown run with 46 seconds left.
Pearce took over on its own 37-yard line, and four plays later saw its punt attempt blocked by Grayson Schantz and knocked out of bounds at the 23-yard line. On the next play, Dominy lofted a pass to a wide-open C.J. Harris for the 23-yard score just 11 seconds before halftime.

CARROLLTON — Carrollton Newman Smith scored 21 consecutive points to rally from a 17-point halftime deficit and take a season-opening victory over McKinney North at Standridge Stadium.
Newman Smith (1-0) took its only lead with 2:47 to play on a 1-yard keeper by quarterback Cole Brewer. Brewer, who finished with 88 yards rushing and 66 yards passing, also had a 30-yard scoring run for Newman Smith in the third quarter.
Smith also had a solid night on the ground, rushing for 153 yards as a team with tailback Andy Wordlow leading the way with 75 yards and a touchdown.
McKinney North (0-1) had a final attempt for a go-ahead score, but its drive ended on a sack and fumble recovery by Newman Smith’s Camryn Cole.

GRAND PRAIRIE — Justin Northwest running back Dakota Chavis ran for three touchdowns and 104 yards in a win over Grand Prairie (0-1).
Justin Northwest (1-0) started the scoring on the second play from scrimmage on a 58-yard pass from Draze Lawliss to Dylan Stubbe. Chavis scored twice in the first quarter as Justin Northwest led, 21-0. His third touchdown came in the third quarter followed by Dzosa Nikolo Kangkolo’s 3-yard touchdown run to go up 35-0.
Grand Prairie quarterback Jaylen Fails threw for two fourth-quarter touchdowns, including a 25-yard pass to Matt LeChuga after which Justin Northwest’s Reggie McDaniel returned the kickoff for a 94-yard touchdown.

ROCKWALL — Senior quarterback Chase Shultz accounted for 352 yards and four touchdowns to rally Rockwall-Heath from a first-half deficit to defeat Garland Naaman Forest at Wilkerson-Sanders Stadium.
Heath (1-0) jumped out to a 14-0 lead on Rico Henderson’s 4-yard run and R.J. Williams’ 21-yard reception from Shultz.
Naaman Forest scored the final 16 points of the half on two catch-and-run touchdowns from Marcus Perkins. Perkins caught a quick slant and split two defenders on a 73-yard score and then took a screen pass 60 yards for a touchdown just two possessions later to help give Naaman (0-1) a 16-14 halftime lead. Naaman quarterback Justin Walker finished with 271 yards and three touchdowns.
Shultz took over the second half by completing his first nine passes and leading Heath to three straight touchdowns on another pass to Williams and running for two scores. He put Heath ahead for good on a beautiful 9-yard run, breaking two tackles in the backfield and streaking down the left sideline for a 28-22 lead. Shultz finished 23-of-34 passing for 251 yards and 101 yards rushing on 12 carries.
Henderson finished with 112 yards and one touchdown for Rockwall-Heath.

FORT WORTH -- Antonio Carey returned an interception for 90 yards with under two minutes to go as Pinkston held off Fort Worth Carter-Riverside. The defensive touchdown was the game’s seventh in a wild affair that saw just one offensive score .
The scoring was opened early in the second quarter, as Damon Stearne returned a fumble 40 yards after a sack. Carter-Riverside returned the favor, as Jordan Pitts returned a fumble 29 yards for a 6-6 tie.
Pinkston’s Jardan Thomas and Damien Chambers-Smith added defensive scores in the first half.

Bishop Dunne (1-0) broke open a close game by scoring three touchdowns in just under six minutes in the third quarter.
Leading 9-6, Dunne fumbled the ball on a kickoff but then made the first of four second-half interceptions.
Dunne had two one-play scoring drives. The first was a 42-yard pass from Micah Simon to Collin Heard. The other was a 22-yard pass to Nick Watkins. Watkins also had a 47-yard interception return in the quarter.
Isaiah Talton had the other score on a 31-yard run for Dunne, which picked up just 180 yards offense. It rode its defense, which limited Eastern Hills (0-1) to 157 yards and one score on a 13-yard pass to Brian Rollins from Decorien Myers.
