DeSoto's Mark Brady named boys Coach of the Year

At state meet: Led DeSoto to the Class 5A team title with 58 points.

Notable: It was DeSoto's first boys title. Brady coached at DeSoto for 31 years, one of the longest-tenured coaches in the area in any sport. He announced his retirement less than two weeks after winning the title. Before this season, DeSoto had two second-place finishes at state in the last eight years. In 2010, Brady was named Coach of the Year after leading DeSoto to 64 points in the state meet. A DeSoto graduate, Brady was a member of the 1974 quarterfinalist football team.

ARLINGTON, FR.

At state meet: Failed to qualify, but ran in three events at the 5A Region I meet: 100, 200 and 4x200 relay.

Notable: Sheard won the 4-5A district meet in 100 and 200, and helped Arlington's 4x200 qualify for regionals. He is believed to be the first freshman to win district in both of the short sprints in Arlington ISD history. The 6-1, 185-pound Sheard is a running back in football. On the freshman team in 2011, he has a shot at the starting job on varsity next season.
