Softball Player of the Week (5/20): Ennis’ Riley Fira

What she did: With her team one loss from elimination against Frisco Wakeland, Fira hit game-winning home runs Friday and Saturday as Ennis came back to win a Class 4A Region II semifinal series, two games to one. On Friday, Fira’s walk-off home run leading off the bottom of the eighth gave Ennis a 4-3 victory. On Saturday, her two-run home run with one out in the top of the seventh rallied Ennis to a 9-8 victory. The state’s top-ranked 4A team advanced to the regional final, where it will battle second-ranked Forney for a berth in the state tournament.

Who she is: A junior catcher who has committed to UT-Arlington.

The stats: Fira is hitting .495 with 15 home runs and 70 RBIs in 40 games, and 63 percent of her hits have gone for extra bases.

She said it: “Yeah, I felt it.” — Fira, when asked if she knew as soon as she hit it that her blast to center field would be a home run Saturday.

Coach said it:

“She’s always got the green light.” — Rodney McNeill, after Fira homered on 3-0 pitches Friday and Saturday.

Did you know? Fira came close to winning a Triple Crown in the regular season, leading area 4A players in home runs and RBIs and ranking eighth in batting average.
