State tennis notebook: Highland Park sending girls, boys and mixed teams to 4A finals

LAKEWAY, Texas — It was a grand day for Highland Park’s doubles teams at the UIL state tennis tournament at Lakeway World of Tennis.

Highland Park’s Sarah Cannon and Alin Piranian blitzed their way into the 4A girls doubles finals with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Taylor Hadash and Katy Bali of Montgomery 6-0, 6-1 then cruised past Wichita Falls’ Amy Gray and Meredith Wileman, 6-3, 6-1, in the semifinals.

“We played pretty well,” said Cannon, “But we can play better.”

In mixed doubles play, Connor LaFavre and Margo Taylor of Highland Park crushed Remi and Jaxon Immler of Austin Lake Travis, 6-1, 6-1 then beat Krishna Jana and Rachel Cunningham of Clear Falls, 6-1, 6-1 to reach the finals.

Highland Park’s boys doubles team of Luke Stainback and Hunter Holman ripped Jacob Brendemuel and Matt Tyer of Waco Midway, 6-2, 6-4. Stainback and Holman then beat Josh Minor and John Jacob of Austin Vandegrift, 6-2, 3-6, 7-5.

Lake Travis coach Carol Creel, whose Cavaliers lost to the Scots in the fall state team tennis championships, is among those impressed with Highland Park.

“Highland Park is just so deep, they seem to keep bringing in younger players that are better. It is challenging,” Creel said.

In 4A boys singles action, Jordan Hart of McKinney North won twice to reach the finals. Hart defeated Dillon Launius, of Austin Vandegrift, 6-0, 1-6, 6-3, in the quarterfinals and Birdville’s Will Adkisson, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6), in the semifinals.

In 5A boys singles competition, Sanjay Goswani of Plano West beat Parker McGuiness of McKinney Boyd 7-6 (5), 6-4 in the quarterfinals before losing in the semifinals to Tito Moreiras of San Antonio Churchill.

In 5A boys doubles action, Tucker Brown and Alejandro Sanoja of New Braunfels beat Kyle Davidson and Mario Sandoval of Garland Naaman Forest, 6-4, 6-0. The Plano West team of Brian Bulger and Parker Cohen lost to Peter Leung and Ricardo Corona of Katy Taylor, 6-2, 6-2
