AUSTIN — Allen sophomore Maddie Szeryk shot a 4-under-par 66 and leads the 5A girls individual event at the UIL State Golf Championships at Onion Creek Country Club.
Spurred by Szeryk’s scintillating showing, Allen is three shots clear of the pack in the girls 5A event, shooting a combined 8-over-par 288 on the windswept par-70, 5,630-yard track.
Defending champ Austin Westlake, led by a 3-under 67 by defending champ Sierra Sims, is in fourth, 14 shots behind, at 22-over 302.
Defending boys champion Mansfield in third place: Mansfield, the defending boys champion in 5A, landed in third place after shooting an 11-over 291 on the rolling, tree-lined par-70, 6,530-yard layout at Onion Creek.
Mansfield trails Austin Westlake (286) by five strokes and Conroe The Woodlands (290) by one.
Byron Nelson, HP boys in contention: Meanwhile, in the 4A tournament played about five miles north at Jimmy Clay Golf Club, the boys team from Trophy Club Byron Nelson is in second place at 13-over-par 301, a shot behind defending champion Austin Lake Travis.
“We had both of our best players struggle at the start but make a charge on the back nine,” Bryon Nelson coach Barry Hawkins said. “Being a stroke back considering our terrible front-side is a credit to the fact that our guys found a way to regain their focus. I would almost rather be the team stalking the lead rather than the one being stalked.”
