Plano West, Highland Park girls have opponents set as soccer state pairings announced
Four area teams will vie for boys and girls titles at the UIL state soccer championships, starting Thursday at Georgetown’s Birkelbach Field.
The Mansfield boys (21-5-4), who won the 5A Region I championship, will play Mission Sharyland (30-3-3) in Thursday’s 5A semifinal. Each team will be making its first trip to the state tournament.
Getting to Georgetown wasn’t easy for Mansfield, which won all five playoff games by one goal or shootout.
Plano West (21-3-4) will play Klein Oak (25-1-1) in Thursday’s 5A girls semifinals, in the tournament’s opening game. Plano West rallied from a two-goal halftime deficit to beat Flower Mound Marcus in the Region I final in a shootout.
In the Class 4A girls bracket, two teams from the Dallas-Fort Worth area advanced.
Highland Park (26-1-2) will play Waco Midway (21-4-4) in one of Friday’s semifinals, and Trophy Club Byron Nelson (24-2-4) will play Cedar Park (21-3-3) in the other.
A four-time champion, Highland Park is returning to state for the first time since 2006. Midway is the only team returning from last year’s field among the 16 qualifiers at state.
Byron Nelson is making its inaugural trip to state in only its third year as a school.
