Soccer roundup (4/11): McKinney Boyd girls lose shootout; Plano West girls win, Jesuit boys advance
There will be no back-to-back soccer champions from the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
After Frisco Wakeland and Southlake Carroll lost last weekend, McKinney Boyd, the Class 5A girls champion in 2011, was the only area champ left standing. No longer; Boyd lost to A&M Consolidated, 3-2, in a shootout Tuesday, falling in penalties, 2-1, in a regional quarterfinal playoff game.
A&M Consolidated scored in the first 21 seconds of the game, but Boyd (21-2-2) battled back, tying the score at 2-2 in the second half.
The loss ends an impressive run for Boyd, which won the 5A title in 2011, 4A title in 2008, was the 5A runner-up in 2010 and lost in the regional final to eventual champ Coppell in 2009.
Plano West 3, Flower Mound 1: Three second-half goals propelled Plano West to its first win in three tries over its District 8-5A rival.
Laurel DeSilvey scored for Flower Mound (20-3-2) in the first half. But Plano West (18-3-4) tied the score with a goal by Casie Ramsier off an assist from Sparky Fischer.
Morgan Murphy and Ramsier scored back-to-back goals in a five-minute span to send Plano West to its second regional tournament in three seasons.
Arlington 3, Midland 0: Arlington made the regional tournament for the first time since 1990 with a 5A victory over last year’s Region I finalist.
Annie Wheeler scored twice in a five-minute span in the first half, on a right-footed shot in the 24th minute and on a header off a corner kick in the 29th minute. Molly Lukk capped the scoring late in the second half with a 25-yard goal.
Sachse 2, Rowlett 0: Sachse avenged two district losses to Rowlett, advancing to the 5A regional tournament for the second straight season.
Candice Followwell scored with four minutes remaining in the first half, taking a cross from Emily Wright before turning and scoring. Wright added the insurance goal in the second half with 17 minutes left. Followwell knocked a 30-yard pass on the ground, and Wright tapped the pass in the goal.
Sachse will face Georgetown in Friday’s Region II semifinals in Round Rock.
Jesuit 2, McKinney Boyd 1 (SO): Jesuit, the 2010 state champion, is the only area 5A boys team remaining in Region II after beating Boyd in penalties.
Dalton Eudy, who missed 13 weeks this season with a broken foot, scored in the 15th minute. After McKinney Boyd tied the scorein the second half, Jesuit keeper Matt Tulli made several key saves in overtime to send the game to penalties.
Plano 2, Richland 1 (SO): In a 5A matchup, Plano converted its first four penalty kicks to win the shootout, 4-1, keeping the season alive for retiring coach Bob Weir.
Tony Santibanez scored a 35-yard goal in the 42nd minute to give Plano the lead. But Richland’s Jorge Cuadra answered with a 20-yard, left-footed strike in the 56th minute.
Carrollton R.L. Turner 2, West Mesquite 1: With 3:45 remaining, Christian Torres’ sharp-angled shot off a rebound was the game-winner for Turner (19-5-4) in a 4A matchup.
Trailing by a goal at half, Turner’s Edgar Moreno tied the score on a long free kick into the upper right of the goal.
Mansfield 3, Hebron 2: Matthew Buckwalter scored with 90 seconds remaining, sending Mansfield to the 5A Region I tournament in Midland.
The score was tied at half, 2-2, with the teams trading goals and the lead. Hebron scored first, but Trevor Kistler’s goal off an assist by Michael Greenfield tied the score at 1-1 in the 21st minute.
Ben Bennett’s header two minutes later gave Mansfield the lead, but Hebron evened it again before half.
