Softball player of the week (4/16): McKinney's Chelsea Thomas

What she did: Thomas pitched back-to-back no-hitters. She struck out 15 in a 5-0 win over McKinney North and had 10 strikeouts in a 13-0, five-inning victory against Richardson Pearce. Thomas also hit a grand slam against McKinney North and was 2-for-4 against Pearce.

Who is she? A sophomore pitcher and third baseman.

The stats: Thomas is 15-14 with a 2.15 ERA and 147 strikeouts in 1331/3 innings. She is hitting .434 with 12 doubles, four home runs and 32 RBIs. McKinney (16-14, 8-4) is in fourth place in District 10-4A and already has clinched a playoff berth.

She said it: “We’ve been throwing riseballs more often, because I’ve actually gotten the spin down this year. That’s been a new pitch we’ve thrown a lot this year.’’
