Girls hoops replay: Big second quarter leads Wylie over Frisco Liberty

PLANO — Junior guard Colby Davis scored a game-high 26 points to lead Wylie to a 68-47 win over Frisco Liberty in a Class 4A first-round playoff game Tuesday.

Wylie (23-11) seized control in the second quarter, outscoring Liberty, 18-2. Trailing 13-11 after one period, Wylie exploded with an 11-0 run to start the second, grabbing a 22-13 lead.

Liberty’s Sara Vincent hit a basket, Liberty’s only points in the second quarter, at 1:18 to end Wylie’s run. But Wylie finished the quarter with seven straight points to take a 29-15 halftime lead.

Junior forward Shae Stewart accounted for 11 of Wylie’s 18 points in the second quarter. She finished with 19.

Liberty (20-13) jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first two minutes of the game, its largest lead. Wylie tied it at 11 with just over a minute to go in the quarter.

Stewart scored four points in the first 40 seconds of the second quarter to give Wylie its first lead. Wylie never trailed after that.

Junior guard Beatrice Attura poured in 21 points for Liberty in the second half. She finished with 25 points, hitting four 3-pointers. Liberty cut Wylie’s lead to 10 with 2:30 to go in the third quarter, but that was as close as it would get.

Wylie advanced to play Lincoln (28-0), the second-ranked 4A team in the state.

Class 5A

DeSoto 43, Killeen Ellison 22: In Waco, New Mexico signee Bryce Owens scored a team-high 12 points, and Camesha Davis added 10 as the state's 10th-ranked 5A team pulled away in the second and third quarters to win its playoff opener.

The score was 6-6 at the end of the first quarter, but DeSoto (31-5) outscored Ellison, 28-11, over the next two quarters. DeSoto advanced to play Garland.

Garland 58, Richardson Berkner 39: At Wylie, Bridget Robinson scored 18 points, and SMU signee Gabrielle Wilkins had 15 for Garland (25-8). Garland built a 17-6 lead at the end of the first quarter en route to the victory.

Skyline 60, McKinney Boyd 30: At Wylie, Stabresa McDaniel had 18 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists for the state's 15th-ranked 5A team. Skyline (28-4) also got 11 points, six rebounds, four assists and four steals from JenVonta Hill and 11 points, six rebounds and four blocks from Daija Thomas.

Skyline will next play Mesquite at 7 p.m. Friday at South Garland.

Sachse 49, Sunset 42: At North Mesquite, North Texas signee Acheil Tac scored 21 points to lead Sachse (28-7) to the win. Sachse will play Temple at 7 p.m. Friday at a site to be determined in Waco.

Class 4A

Mansfield Summit 55, Waco Midway 29: In Corsicana, North Carolina State signee Ashley Eli and Shayna Jackson scored 10 points apiece to lead the state's fourth-ranked 4A team to a bi-district rout.

Summit (31-3) advanced to play Fort Worth Trimble Tech on Friday at Richland. Summit held Midway to 17 points through the first three quarters.

Arlington Seguin 55, Killeen 41: At Hamilton, Dwanisha Tate scored a game-high 18 points, and Alarie Mayze added 13 to help Seguin (25-10) advance to a second-round matchup with Aledo, the state's 10th-ranked 4A team. The score was 25-25 at halftime before Seguin outscored Killeen, 30-16, in the second half.

West Mesquite 80, Hutto 51: In Waco, Alexus Bertrand scored 18 points and had five steals and five assists to lead West Mesquite (28-7), the state's 16th-ranked 4A team, to victory.

Jasmine Dumas added 13 points for West Mesquite, and Claudia Price had 12 points and 13 rebounds.

West Mesquite advanced to play Tyler John Tyler on Friday. West Mesquite led by six at halftime, then outscored Hutto, 42-19, in the second half.

Amarillo Palo Duro 44, Denton Ryan 36: At Burkburnett, Sasha Watson scored 17 points to lead Palo Duro to a victory over District 4-4A champion Denton Ryan (22-10). Rahsheeba Walker led Ryan with 17 points.

Emory Rains 40, North Forney 38: At Rockwall-Heath, Klara Bradshaw hit the game-winning shot with two seconds remaining to give Emory Rains the win.
