All-American Alexis Jones leads Irving MacArthur girls over Mansfield in quest for 5A title repeat
ARLINGTON — Irving MacArthur opened the playoffs Tuesday night looking a lot like last season’s team that won the Class 5A state title.
MacArthur defeated Mansfield, its first victim in the 2011 postseason, 81-53, at Arlington Lamar.
MacArthur (32-2) will play Keller at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Colleyville Heritage.
MacArthur got contributions from throughout the lineup. Alexis Jones, the McDonald’s All-American, scored a team-high 25 points. The Duke signee spent much of the first half getting her teammates involved, then took control with a 15-point second half.
With balanced distribution, four MacArthur players finished in double figures. Ayriel Anderson scored 19 points, Khoria Newman had 18, and Tory Jacobs added 10.
“The girls seemed very relaxed, very focused on what they needed to do,” MacArthur coach Suzy Oelschlegel said. “It’s a nice way to start.”
Keyra-Sue Johnson led Mansfield (22-13) with 25 points. Tamaira King scored 10.
MacArthur took charge early, forcing turnovers on Mansfield’s first four possessions.
With so much talent coming from so many directions, MacArthur spread Mansfield thin. Mansfield scored only one basket in the first six minutes. Mansfield needed a 6-1 run to go into halftime trailing 27-11.
Jones scored three of MacArthur’s first four baskets during a 9-0 run to open the second half.
“We came out very strong,” Jones said. “It’s nice to have everybody scoring. It’s going to take a team effort in the playoffs.”
