Flower Mound, Lewisville get new football coaches

Boerne's Johnson, Katy's Miller approved by Lewisville ISD

Lewisville ISD named new head football coaches for Lewisville and Flower Mound high schools Monday night.

The LISD school board approved Katy defensive coordinator Gregg Miller for the Lewisville position, while former Hebron defensive coordinator and current Boerne head coach Dane Johnson was named to lead Flower Mound. Both votes were unanimous.

Miller — an assistant at Katy for more than a decade — succeeds Dick Olin, who was 7-23 in his three seasons after a successful run at Baytown Lee.

Miller was Katy’s defensive coordinator since 2004, promoted when then-defensive coordinator Gary Joseph moved up to become head coach.

Since that time, Katy has added to its rich history, winning Class 5A Division II titles in 2007 and 2008 and finishing runners-up twice.

A basketball and football star for Southlake Carroll, Johnson returns to the Dallas-Fort Worth area after a stop as head coach at 3A Boerne, where he reopened the school in 2009, going 14-16 in three seasons.

Before taking the Boerne job, Johnson was a defensive assistant at Hebron — a secondary coach under Joe McBride when Hebron won the Class 4A Division II title in 2005. He eventually became defensive coordinator under Brian Brazil.

Johnson replaces Cody Vanderford, the only football coach in Flower Mound’s history.

In 12 seasons, Vanderford was 60-64.
