Tigers roar: RB Cam Washington's 244 yards boost Corsicana to state semis
Corsicana seals victory with second-half scores
FORNEY — Cameron Washington carried 40 times for 244 yards and three touchdowns as Corsicana broke open a close game with three second-half scores en route to a 42-21 win over Kilgore in the Class 4A Division II Region II final at City Bank Stadium.
Corsicana (13-1) advances to play the winner of Saturday afternoon’s game between Aledo (11-2) and Stephenville (11-2).
Kilgore (9-5) tied the score at 21 with 9:17 left in the third quarter on L.D. Anthony’s 20-yard touchdown run, his third of the game. That capped a quick five-play drive on the opening Kilgore possession of the second half.
But Corsicana regained the lead for good on DeVontay Bell’s 6-yard touchdown pass to Jack Saipongi with 19 seconds to play in the third quarter. It was the only pass Bell threw in the second half, after going 5-for-8 with two interceptions before the break.
Three plays after Bell’s touchdown pass, Tevin McDonald stepped in front of a Riley Toler pass and returned it 43 yards to the Kilgore 1, setting up a touchdown plunge by Washington.
Corsicana then iced the game with a 12-play, 63-yard march that took more than six minutes off the clock and ended with Washington’s third and final touchdown from the 1.
Corsicana led 21-14 at the half on the strength of 133 yards rushing and a touchdown from Washington and two rushing scores by Bell.
Washington scored on a 3-yard run as time ran out in the first half, capping an 11-play, 60-yard drive after Anthony’s 2-yard scoring run on fourth-and-goal had pulled Kilgore within 15-14 at 2:58.
The lead could easily have been more.
Ahead 15-7, Corsicana was stopped by interceptions on consecutive drives starting inside Kilgore territory.
J.D. Jones picked off Bell at the 4 to thwart the first drive, which started at the Kilgore 2 after Corsicana’s Breyon Hill recovered a fumble at the Kilgore 29.
The next drive started at the Kilgore 37 after a short punt, but Benny Colbert stopped that one with an interception and a 16-yard return to the 35.
This time, Kilgore responded with a 12-play, 65-yard drive that took nearly six minutes and ended with Anthony’s second rushing touchdown.
Kilgore appeared to be stopped short when Dominic Kelly dropped Dondra Halton for a 2-yard loss on third-and-goal and Shelton Tolliver tackled Anthony for a loss on a fourth-down fake field goal try.
But Corsicana was offside on the play and Anthony made good on his second fourth-down try.
Halton, who led Kilgore in rushing with 61 yards on 12 first-half carries, left the field limping after Kelly’s goal-line stop. Halton did not return to the game, spending the second half on the sidelines with ice on his right knee and ankle.
