Rockwall-Heath yields winning score to Sherman with 35 seconds left

DENTON — Gus Daniel’s 31-yard touchdown pass to JT Luper with 35 seconds to play capped a fourth-quarter comeback, helping Sherman beat Rockwall-Heath, 28-25, in a Class 4A Division I Region II semifinal at Apogee Stadium on Saturday.

Sherman (10-3), which faced a 19-0 deficit, advances to play Tyler John Tyler next week.

Luper grabbed a bullet from Daniel at the Heath 18, spun away from a would-be tackler and sprinted to the end zone, capping a four-play, 63-yard drive that took 45 seconds after Heath (11-2) had taken a 25-20 lead on quarterback Cody Court’s 2-yard sneak.

Braylon Mitchell’s two-point conversion run put the finishing touches on a 22-point fourth quarter for Sherman, which trailed 19-0 until Ryan Reid’s 92-yard kickoff return for a touchdown as time ran out in the third quarter.

The wind affected a punt, helping Sherman, which got the ball at the Heath 3. Luper ran it in from there.

On the next series, Heath gambled on fourth-and-3 from its 27 rather than trying another punt into the 27 mph wind, but Sherman stuffed that.

Six plays later, Daniel found Joseph Harvey for a 9-yard touchdown, and Sherman had its first lead of the game, 20-19.
