Mollett's 27 kills help McKinney Boyd reach 5A volleyball final

SAN MARCOS, Texas — The ice pack strapped to McKinney Boyd middle blocker Megan Mollett’s shoulder told the story of her team’s 3-1 win over Houston Cypress Falls in the Class 5A semifinals.

Mollett, who finished the day with 27 kills, was the force responsible for her team’s offense and its opponent’s adjustments in one of the most evenly matched semifinals in San Marcos.

“We started out strong, then had to fight for every point,” Boyd coach Kelly Quinn said. “They have that in them. They have that fight in them.”

Boyd looked stronger in the first two games of the match, which it won 25-18 and 25-19, respectively. In the first game, Cy-Falls was unable to defend against Mollett, whose strong kills were responsible for the Broncos’ early success.

In the second game, though, the Golden Eagles looked stronger and brought in bigger players to counter Mollett’s attack. The game was close early, and Cy-Falls hung with Boyd through most of the match.

“You’re never going to stop somebody of that caliber, but we contained her those last few games,” Cy-Falls coach Kathy Stephenson said.

The second game began a pattern, in which the teams remained close through the middle of the game. That happened again in the third game of the night, in which a re-energized Cy-Falls team eventually took a commanding 23-17 lead before winning, 25-20.

Cy-Falls looked like it might be able to force a fifth game after figuring out how to block Boyd’s hits and reorganizing its lineup to guard against Mollett. Neither team was able to pull out to a commanding lead in the game, but Boyd surged at the end to a 25-22 win.

The Broncos will face Coppell in the finals at 7 p.m. Saturday.
