Regional volleyball playoff roundup: Coppell ends Arlington win streak in sweep
ABILENE — For more than two months, no opponent had been able to find an answer for the Arlington volleyball team. But on Friday night in the Class 5A Region I semifinals, the Lady Colts were the team unable to come up with an answer.
Coppell ended Arlington’s 17-match winning streak with a 25-23, 25-16, 25-13 sweep at McMurry University. Coppell advanced to play Flower Mound Marcus in Saturday’s 1 p.m. regional championship match with a berth in the state tournament on the line.
Flower Mound Marcus (29-18) advanced with a 25-22, 17-25, 25-16, 25-22 victory over Arlington Martin.
Arlington (35-12) had its chances to take the first set. With a 5-4 lead, it scored seven consecutive points for a 12-4 advantage. Coppell (38-8) worked its way back into a tie at 21-21 before Arlington took a 23-21 lead. But Coppell scored the next four points to win the set.
The second set was tied at 14 until a seven-point run by Coppell gave it control of the set and the match.

Class 5A Region II: At Sam Houston State in Huntsville, Megan Mollett had 28 kills and 10 digs, and Drew Darling recorded 13 kills and 17 digs to lead McKinney Boyd to a 24-26, 25-16, 25-22, 25-18 win over Georgetown in a regional semifinal.
Boyd (43-6) will face Austin Westlake in the regional final at noon Saturday. Westlake beat Lake Highlands, 25-16, 25-19, 25-14, in the other semifinal. Brittany Phelan led Boyd with 25 assists, and Brantlee Reid had 23 assists.
Class 4A Region II: At the Garland Special Events Center, Richardson Pearce rallied from a two-set deficit to beat Waxahachie, 20-25, 22-25, 25-21, 25-13, 15-9, in a regional semifinal.
Waxahachie (41-5) raced to a 12-3 lead in the opening set and never trailed in the set. The second set was tied at 21 before Waxahachie scored four of the last five points.
Pearce (34-13) trailed 19-16 and 21-20 in the third set but scored the final five points to take the set. Pearce dominated the fourth set, then bolted to a 13-6 lead in the final set. Shelby Sullivan led the comeback for Pearce, tallying 25 kills and 18 digs.
Rockwall-Heath beat Red Oak, 21-25, 25-16, 25-17, 18-25, 15-11, in the second semifinal. With early leads of 3-0, and 7-2, Heath never trailed in the decisive fifth set.
Regina Tillis led Heath with 30 kills and 25 digs. Claire Carpenter added 14 kills, and Paige Parent had 31 digs.
The victory by Rockwall-Heath sets up a regional final against Richardson Pearce at 4 p.m. Saturday. Pearce beat Rockwall-Heath in straight sets twice in district play.
Class 4A Region I: In Abilene, Trophy Club Byron Nelson hung with the No. 5 team in the state early on before falling to Dumas, 25-22, 20-25, 28-26, 25-11, in a regional semifinal.
Byron Nelson, in its second varsity season and in the playoffs for the first time, ended the season with a 33-11 record.
Haley Tippett led Byron Nelson (33-11) in kills with nine, and Elizabeth Pennington had seven. Dumas (40-8) advanced to face Canyon Randall in Saturday’s regional final.
In the other semifinal, Randall rallied to beat Aledo, 25-14, 20-25, 21-25, 25-17, 15-9. It marked the fourth time in five seasons Randall has defeated Aledo in the regional tournament.
Briana Sharratt led Aledo (41-7) with 11 kills, and Raygan McLelland added seven.
Class 3A Region II: At Texas A&M-Commerce, Shannon Connell had 21 assists as three-time state champion Lovejoy defeated Paris North Lamar, 25-7, 25-16, 25-16, in a regional semifinal. Iowa State signee Andie Malloy had 16 assists and 14 kills for Lovejoy (45-4), which faces District 11-3A rival Prosper at 1 p.m. Saturday in a rematch of last year’s regional final.
Brooke Ray added 12 digs, while Mallorie Puckett and Ebony Nwanebu had nine kills each for Lovejoy, which is making its fifth regional tournament appearance in as many years of playing varsity volleyball.
In the other semifinal, Kelsey Zukowski had 25 assists, nine digs and six aces as Prosper defeated Longview Spring Hill, 25-20, 25-22, 25-11. Nicole Marzik added 15 kills and 14 digs for Prosper (37-5).
