Plano West's victory over Plano not enough to nab playoff spot
QB Korry runs for 2 touchdowns, but effort gets no help for postseason
PLANO — Quarterback Travis Korry passed for one touchdown and ran for two more — all in the first half — as Plano West scored a bittersweet homecoming win over rival Plano at John Clark Stadium.
Plano West (6-4, 4-3) needed a win and either a Plano East loss or a Hebron win to claim the fourth and final playoff spot from District 8-5A. But neither cooperated.
Korry threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Nathan Orbach one play after Plano West recovered a fumbled punt less than two minutes into the game.
He also ran eight yards for a touchdown after Carlos Wiggins dashed 70 yards to the Plano 10-yard line, and then went untouched 12 yards for a score after a nifty pitch fake late in the second quarter.
That gave the Plano West junior quarterback eight rushing touchdowns in the past two games. He ran for 353 yards and six touchdowns in a win at Flower Mound last week.
Wiggins led all rushers with 125 yards on 15 carries for Plano West.
Plano (4-6, 1-6) got a 33-yard field goal from Cole Eckeberger in the third quarter and a late 11-yard touchdown pass from Sam Morell to Hunter Gore, but the outcome was never in doubt.
Plano finished with more first downs and nearly as much total offense as Plano West, but was its own worst enemy with two lost fumbles in the first half.
