Receiver’s big day lifts Denton Guyer past Keller
KELLER — Conner Crane caught three touchdown passes and finished with a career-high 199 receiving yards Saturday afternoon as Denton Guyer defeated Keller, 35-21.
Crane had touchdown receptions of 76, 70 and 22 yards, and Guyer quarterback Jerrod Heard added a 65-yard touchdown run. The Guyer defense contributed two interceptions that each set up scores.
Guyer (6-2, 4-1 7-5A) allowed no first downs on Keller’s final four possessions. Keller was held to 240 yards.
“We haven’t been making the big plays over the last few weeks,” Crane said. “So we took things more personal this week. We had good practices and wanted to come out and make things happen. So this a good game for our confidence and to give us momentum going toward the playoffs.”
Guyer broke a 21-21 tie on the third play of the fourth quarter. Guyer faced a fourth-and-6 at the 21 when Heard lofted a long pass to Crane around the 5. Despite being surrounded by three defenders, the 6-foot-4 Stanford commit reached up to make the 19-yard reception and give Guyer a first-and-goal at the 2. On the next play, running back Sebastian Williams broke through and the Wildcats led 28-21 with 10:54 left in the fourth quarter.
Guyer held on the ensuing Keller possession. On Guyer’s next offensive play, Heard launched a pass over the middle to Crane, who was behind the defender and ran untouched for a 76-yard score that took Guyer just 11 seconds.
