Wylie East gets payback, slams door on Wylie’s comeback hopes with big second quarter

WYLIE — For four series Friday, Wylie had a chance.

But as the end of the first quarter approached with the score tied at seven, a decisive tackle on fourth down erased any Wylie momentum. The Pirates gave the ball to Victor Jones, and Wylie East defensive back Mian Wilson dived for the running back, pulling him to the turf short of a first down. Wylie never recovered in a 63-7 loss to Wylie East.

After the Wilson tackle, Wylie (3-4, 1-3 District 10-4A) was forced to turn the ball over on downs, and East capitalized with a 22-yard Jabari Anderson run to go up 14-7. East (6-1, 3-1) scored again on a 79-yard pass from Garrett McCain to Quan Jones.

The Raiders scored next on a 5-yard pass to tight end Jesse Brubaker, and then again on a 7-yard Kevon Mack run, going into halftime up 35-7.

In the second half, Wylie scored on a 57-yard Anderson run and then on a 7-yard pass from McCain to Marcell Ateman. The final two scores came on a 66-yard Jeremy Flores reception and a 2-yard Quan Jones reception. With eight minutes left, Brubaker took over as quarterback for East and took a knee for the rest of the quarter.

In an attempt to energize its offense, Wylie pulled quarterback Kameron Kelly in favor of Donald Slay in the third quarter, but Slay had little effect in a move that was ultimately too little, too late. Just a year after losing to Wylie, 57-7, East got its payback.

The offenses sputtered on their initial possessions. Wylie scored first on a 25-yard Victor Jones run, and Anderson answered with a 66-yard touchdown for East.
