Mansfield holds on to beat Duncanville, 27-20, and improve to 6-0

MANSFIELD – For the first time since 1970, Mansfield is 6-0.

Kenneth Burks scored two touchdowns, and Mansfield held on in the second half to defeat Duncanville, 27-20, in a District 5-5A game Friday night at R.L. Anderson Stadium.

The victory improves Mansfield’s record to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in district, while Duncanville drops to 4-2 and 2-1.

Mansfield was undefeated and in this same position last season, but Duncanville scored late in an eventual 41-34 victory.

This time, a long pass by Duncanville on fourth-and-15 from midfield fell incomplete with 3:08 left in the game, and Mansfield ran out the clock after taking possession.

Burks, who rushed for 192 yards on 28 carries, scored his second touchdown with 8:11 remaining in the game, and a two-point conversion run by Bryan Shanklin gave Mansfield a 27-13 lead.

Shanklin also scored a touchdown midway through the third quarter on a 5-yard run that broke open a 13-13 halftime tie.

After Burks’ touchdown run, Duncanville came back on its next possession, as quarterback Deandre Grimes avoided fierce defensive pressure and found a wide-open Jeff Thomas for a 65-yard touchdown pass to cut the deficit to 27-20 after the extra point with 6:44 remaining in the game.

Burks scored his first touchdown on a screen pass on fourth-and-4 from the Duncanville 18 as Jerod Evans barely escaped pressure to make the throw with 8:12 remaining in the second quarter.
