Timberview's hopes of reaching state softball tourney end with 16-3 loss

ABILENE — The Mansfield Timberview softball team saw its season end with a 16-3 loss to Lubbock Coronado in the Class 5A Region I final at Abilene Christian University on Saturday night.

After a 3-1 win late Friday night, Coronado swept the series and advanced to the state tournament after the start of Saturday’s game was delayed just under 90 minutes because of lightning. Both games in the series had pregame weather delays.

Coronado scored all of its runs with two outs, including 13 runs in the bottom of the second. Pitcher Monique Garcia drove in two runs with a sharp single to right-center with the bases loaded for a 2-0 lead. After Kaitlyn Dawson walked to reload the bases, Taegan Kirk reached on a dropped third strike to plate another run.

Mariah Denson’s first pitch to Abbe Alvarez sailed to the backstop, allowing Garcia to score to make it 4-0. Alvarez then drove in both runners with a double to the gap in left-center.
