Allie Smith, Flower Mound
What she did: Flower Mound was two outs from elimination Friday, trailing South Grand Prairie 4-3 with one out in the bottom of the seventh in a one-game playoff. But with the bases loaded and a 1-2 count, Smith hit a walk-off, two-run double to give the state's third-ranked 5A team a 5-4 victory over SGP in the second round of the playoffs. Smith was 2-for-3 with three RBIs.
Who is she? A senior first baseman who has signed to play for West Texas A&M.
The stats: Smith is hitting .500 with 42 RBIs in 34 games. She has 23 extra-base hits, including six home runs.
She said it: With two strikes on Smith in her at-bat in the seventh inning, a timeout was called, so Smith and her teammates huddled with coach Mark Larriba. "Coach was talking to us, and he was trying to make sure I was calmed down and comfortable and staying focused on my game plan. I looked at him, and I said, 'Coach, can we just pray?' He was like, 'Sure.' We all held hands and we started praying."
Coach said it: "When she was in the on-deck circle [in the seventh inning], I said, 'You're the person I want in the batter's box.' She has been clutch the entire year ... walk-off home run against Lewisville, some other big hits." — Mark Larriba
Did you know? Smith plans to major in broadcast journalism and hopes to become a sportscaster.
