Softball playoffs: Lovejoy gets 11 hits in winning opener; McKinney Boyd ends Rowlett’s streak at 18; Lewisville, Plano win
ENNIS — Third baseman Jaclyn Willis had four hits and pitcher Danielle Brochu held high-scoring Ennis to three infield singles in Lovejoy’s 9-2 victory in Game 1 of the best-of-3 Class 4A second-round playoff series Thursday.
Lovejoy (20-12-1), the 4A state runner-up last year, totaled 11 hits off Ennis ace Taylor Maliska.
“Being selective and making her work was the big thing,” Willis said. “Our entire team was selective.”
Brochu, a junior, fought control problems early, but found her rhythm. She struck out three. Ennis (31-5), ranked sixth in the state in 4A, stranded 10 runners — eight in the first four innings.
Three runs in the third gave Lovejoy a 4-1 lead in the third. Willis had an RBI single, and two runs scored Kallie Killingsworth’s bad-hop infield single. Two Ennis errors sandwiched around Willis’ third base hit led to two more unearned Lovejoy runs in the fifth for a 6-1 lead.
