Mansfield Timberview takes opener of area softball playoff series against FM Marcus
FLOWER MOUND – Flower Mound Marcus will need to rally for two straight wins once again in order to get past Mansfield Timberview.
Timberview scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning Thursday night to claim a 5-2 victory in Game 1 of a three-game area series.
Last year Marcus eliminated Timberview after a similar Game 1 loss, outscoring its opponent 16-2 the next two days to advance.
It’s hard to imagine Timberview pitcher Mariah Denson giving up that many runs this time around if she pitches like she did Thursday.
The sophomore ace struck out seven batters and limited Marcus to just two hits. The first of those hits was Ashley Hardin’s two-run home run in the first inning, and Denson blanked Marcus thereafter.
Timberview remained behind until the top of the sixth. Alex Taylor led off the inning with a 10-pitch walk, and Timberview loaded the bases with nobody out.
Ashley Timmons drove in a run on a fielder’s choice, another run crossed on a wild pitch to take the lead, and Maddie Munoz’s squeeze bunt plated a third.
Denson retired Marcus in order in the bottom of the seventh to seal the win, but not before a diving catch in foul territory by senior right fielder Mayan Meza Tovar for the second out of the inning.
Marcus starter Katelyn Cooper allowed only two hits – both singles – before getting into trouble and being relieved in the sixth. Only two of the five hits she surrendered left the infield. She finished with eight strikeouts.
Timberview can sweep the series at home with a win at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
