Softball playoffs: Carroll rallies in sixth to upset No. 15 Martin
The Southlake Carroll softball team scored four runs in the top of the sixth and opened the playoffs by rallying for a 6-3 win over Arlington Martin, which ended the regular season ranked 15th in the state in Class 5A.
Carroll (18-12), the fourth-place team from District 4-5A, will try to sweep the best-of-3 first-round series when it hosts Game 2 at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
With District 3-5A champion Martin leading 3-2 and two outs in the sixth, an RBI single by Virginia signee Lauren Heintzelman tied the score, and Jacqui Lehane followed with an RBI single to give Carroll a 4-3 lead. Texas Tech signee Alex Schneider then hit a two-run double to make it 6-3.
In other bi-district playoff games:
Lewisville 16, Euless Trinity 0: LSU pledge Maribeth Gorsuch pitched a no-hitter and struck out 13, and Miranda Worthington homered as defending 5A state champion Lewisville (25-7) routed Trinity in Game 1 of a best-of-3 series.
McKinney Boyd 10, Richardson Berkner 0: Erin Riding and Riley Wagner combined on a five-inning no-hitter as Boyd won a one-game playoff. Riding, an Iowa pledge, pitched 41/3 innings, walked three and struck out 11.
Casandra Heller was 2-for-3 and scored three runs for District 10-5A co-champion Boyd (22-4-2).
Hebron 5, Colleyville Heritage 4: An error with two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh allowed Hebron to score two runs and walk off with a win in Game 1 of a best-of-3 series.
District 6-5A champion Colleyville Heritage built a 4-1 lead. But Hebron (15-17), the fourth-place finisher in 5-5A, scored twice with two outs in the sixth on an RBI double by Olivia Martinez and an RBI single by Brynn Putnam.
Flower Mound 9, Irving 1: Texas Tech pledge Annelise Oswalt pitched a two-hitter, struck out nine and was 3-for-4 with an RBI as the state’s third-ranked 5A team won Game 1 of its series.
Richland 10, Arlington Bowie 0: Skylar Castro, Shelby Watson, Lauren Oatman and Oklahoma State signee Maddi Holcomb homered for District 4-5A champion Richland (23-7) in its Game 1 win.
Keller 18, Fort Worth Paschal 8: Kaylee Grant was 4-for-4 with six RBIs for Keller in Game 1, and Camryn Woodall was 4-for-4 and scored five runs.
Ennis 13, Jacksonville 0: Courtlyn Benitez hit an inside the park home run, and Tulsa pledge Julia Hollingsworth tripled twice for 15-4A champion Ennis (29-4) in Game 1.
North Forney 8, The Colony 4: Peyton Hedrick, Marilyn Rizzato and Christi Flanigan each had two RBIs as 10-4A champion North Forney won Game 1.
Mesquite Poteet 6, Frisco 4: Poteet got the Game 1 win as Shelby Wilson was 3-for-4 with three RBIs.
Denton Guyer 15, Saginaw 4: Pitcher Shayne Starkey went 4-for-4 with four RBIs as Guyer (25-4) won a one-game playoff in 4A.
Waxahachie 12, Lindale 2: Miranda Herron had six RBIs for Waxahachie in a one-game playoff in 4A.
Trophy Club Byron Nelson 16, Saginaw Chisholm Trail 6: Byron Nelson’s Ashley Silva drove in five runs, and Chelsie McClure doubled three times in Game 1.
