Softball playoff roundup: FM Marcus edges Keller to reach regional final; Lewisville sweeps nationally ranked team; Plano ousted
COLLEYVILLE — Sophomore Bonna Molina scored the game’s only run on a fielding error with two outs in the top of the fifth as Flower Mound Marcus beat Keller, 1-0, on Saturday in Game 3 of a best-of-3 Class 5A Region I semifinal series.
Marcus (31-7-1), the third-place team from District 5-5A, will play 5-5A No. 4 seed Lewisville in the 5A Region I final.
Molina walked with one out, moved to second on a fielder’s choice and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Molly Conklin then hit a popup to second base, but in windy conditions the ball was misplayed.
“Tonight just went our way,” Marcus coach Christy Tumilty said. “Keller plays outstanding defense.”
Senior Hannah Null, an Abilene Christian signee, pitched a three-hit shutout and struck out six for Marcus. Tumilty said the approach changed after “we didn’t challenge their hitters enough” in a Game 1 loss.
Keller freshman pitcher Kaylee Rogers left the game after Molina scored and was replaced by Robyn Stidd. Each team stranded five runners.
In other regional semifinals:
Lewisville 4, Lubbock Coronado 3: Selena Garcia drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs in the top of the sixth to drive in courtesy runner Summer Quiroga with the winning run as Lewisville swept the best-of-3 Region I series against a Coronado team that’s No. 12 in the USA Today/National Fastpitch Coaches Association national rankings.
Lewisville (27-12) finished fourth in District 5-5A. But it has won eight in a row after losing to Hurst L.D. Bell in Game 1 of its first-round playoff series.
Miranda Worthington hit a two-run home run for Lewisville with two outs in the third inning to tie the score, 2-2. It was her third home run of the series.
Coronado scored a run in the fifth to take a 3-2 lead. But in the sixth, Lewisville loaded the bases with no outs as Worthington was hit by a pitch, Emily Lasky doubled and Megan Haggard walked. A one-out error allowed Worthington to score the tying run.
Freshman Maribeth Gorsuch pitched the final five innings and allowed one run to earn the win. She also had two hits and scored a run.
Kingwood 14, Plano 4: The state’s sixth-ranked 5A team had 18 hits — all singles — to finish a two-game sweep and eliminate Plano, the No. 4 seed from District 10-5A. Kingwood will play The Woodlands in the 5A Region II final.
T’Eryn Bevels was 3-for-3 with an RBI for Plano (20-17), and Ashlee Begis and Brianna Boulanger each went 2-for-3 with a double. It was the fourth consecutive season that Plano made it to the regional quarterfinals or beyond.
Wolfforth Frenship 16, Birdville 5: Frenship trailed 5-3 after four innings but scored 13 runs in the fifth to sweep the Region I series. Frenship scored 27 runs in the two-game series after being held to five runs in a two-game series loss to Birdville in the regional semifinals last season.
Kennedale 4, Andrews 1: Maegan Garza hit a tiebreaking three-run home run with two outs in the fourth inning as the state’s second-ranked 3A team finished a two-game sweep.
Kennedale (25-10) reached the 3A Region I final for the second straight year and will face Burkburnett. Kaitlyn Leeds got the victory, pitching a five-hitter.
