Softball roundup: FM Marcus ousts rival Flower Mound in Game 3; Keller and Lewisville advance
Ashley Hardin homered for the second time in the series, and senior pitcher Hannah Null made an early lead hold up as Flower Mound Marcus beat Flower Mound, 5-1, in Game 3 of a best-of-3 Class 5A Region I quarterfinal series Saturday.
Marcus (29-6-1), the No. 3 seed from District 5-5A, eliminated the state’s ninth-ranked 5A team and avenged two district losses to 5-5A champion Flower Mound (25-10-1). Marcus advanced to play Keller.
Marcus scored twice in the top of the first, but Flower Mound got a run in the bottom of the inning. A two-out RBI single by Madison Greenwell in the second gave Marcus a 3-1 lead, and Hardin followed Greenwell’s triple with a two-run homer in the seventh.
Kelly Powell was 3-for-3 with two RBIs, and Kellie Wanhanen scored two runs as Flower Mound won Game 2, 5-3, earlier Saturday.
In other regional quarterfinals:
Keller 6, Midland 4: Texas A&M signee April Ryan and Texas Tech signee Brittany Lee each went 2-for-4 with two RBIs as Keller finished a two-game sweep.
Keller (29-4-1) trailed, 2-0, before scoring six runs in the fifth. Robyn Stidd earned a save in each game in the series, pitching five scoreless innings.
Lewisville 4, Waco Midway 0: For the second straight game, Chloe Campise and Maribeth Gorsuch combined on a two-hit shutout, giving Lewisville a two-game sweep. Lewisville (25-12), the No. 4 seed from District 5-5A, will face nationally ranked Lubbock Coronado in a 5A Region I semifinal.
Emily Lasky was 2-for-2 with an RBI for Lewisville (25-12), and Kacie Saucedo had two RBIs. Waco Midway reached the state tournament in 4A each of the last three years.
Lubbock Coronado 2-2, Richland 3-1: Richland won Game 2 in 10 innings against a Coronado team that is No. 15 in the USA Today/National Fastpitch Coaches Association national rankings. But Coronado won Game 3, 2-1, to claim the series.
McKinney Boyd 1, Rockwall 0: Iowa pledge Erin Riding pitched a six-hit shutout, and Jill Nicklas scored the only run as Boyd completed a two-game sweep of a 5A Region II series.
Ennis 6, Lovejoy 1: Taylor Maliska pitched a five-hitter as Ennis won Game 2 and forced a Game 3 late Saturday night. Julia Hollingsworth was 3-for-4, and Riley Fira reached base in all four at-bats.
Frisco Centennial 11, Carrollton Creekview 1: Kaytie Proctor hit a grand slam to cap a seven-run sixth inning as Centennial, the No. 3 seed from District 9-4A, swept the series. Abby Walsh was 3-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs, and Mackenzie Jones threw a two-hitter.
Birdville 8, Trophy Club Byron Nelson 4: Jordan Hendrix was 2-for-5 with three RBIs as Birdville completed the sweep. McKenna Moore and Cherlynn Townsend each had three hits, and Townsend and Noelle Perritt each had two RBIs.
Kennedale 14, Iowa Park 0: Jazlyn Crowder homered and had five RBIs as the state’s second-ranked 3A team swept the series. Kaitlyn Leeds pitched a three-hit shutout.
Frisco Lone Star 9, Celina 5: McKenzie Stone and Marisa Unclebach each had two hits to lead Lone Star to a sweep.
Pilot Point 5, Grandview 1: Skylar Cagle threw a two-hitter as the state’s top-ranked 2A team swept the series.
