Softball roundup: Walk-off single sends Flower Mound to third-round of playoffs

Allie Smith’s single drove in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh as Flower Mound beat Belton, 10-9, on Friday and completed a two-game sweep of the best-of-3 Class 5A second-round playoff series.

Sydney Springfield led off the seventh with a single — her fourth hit of the game for the state’s ninth-ranked 5A team. An error allowed Alex Jennings to reach and advanced the runners to second and third, then Smith’s hit sent Flower Mound (24-8-1) to the Region I quarterfinals.

Flower Mound trailed, 6-1, before scoring six runs in the third. Belton scored a run with two outs in the top of the seventh to tie it, 9-9.

McKinney Boyd 2, Mesquite Horn 1: A single by Cassandra Heller and then an error, both with two outs, gave McKinney Boyd the winning run in the bottom of the ninth in Game 1 of a best-of-3 series.

Iowa pledge Erin Riding allowed five hits and struck out 18 for Boyd (20-12-1). After Horn took a 1-0 lead on an RBI single by Ashley Moore in the top of the sixth, Boyd’s McKenna Henry tied it with a home run in the bottom of the inning.

Southlake Carroll 2, Lubbock Coronado 1: Alex Schneider was 2-for-3 with a double, home run and two RBIs, and she was also the winning pitcher as Carroll won Game 1. Coronado is No. 10 in the USA Today/National Fastpitch Coaches Association national rankings.

Flower Mound Marcus 12, Mansfield Timberview 0: Hannah Null pitched a one-hit shutout and struck out nine as Flower Mound Marcus avoided playoff elimination.

A day after being shut out, Marcus (26-5-1) pounded out 11 hits and evened the best-of-3 Class 5A series at one win apiece. Game 3 is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. Saturday at Fort Worth Brewer.

Madison Greenwell went 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs.

Plano West 13, Rowlett 5: Kelsey Vining was 3-for-4, and Marissa Butler struck out 12 as Plano West (17-13) won a one-game playoff.

Plano 6, Rockwall-Heath 2: Memphis signee Calli Irvin homered and was the winning pitcher, and Tanner Davis went 3-for-4 as District 10-5A No. 4 seed Plano (17-14) won Game 1.

Lewisville 9, Mansfield 2: Emily Lasky homered and drove in three runs, and Miranda Worthington scored two runs and had two RBIs as District 5-5A No. 4 seed Lewisville swept Mansfield.

Richland 3, El Paso Americas 0: Haley Freyman threw a four-hit shutout, and Brooke Noel went 2-for-3 with two RBIs as Richland (29-5) won Game 1.

Keller 2, El Paso Franklin 1: Keller outhit Franklin, 8-1, and escaped with a Game 1 win.

Waco Midway 11, Hebron 0: Midway scored nine runs in the third inning and went on to sweep Hebron (18-13-2).

Class 4A

Trophy Club Byron Nelson 7, Burleson 6: Byron Nelson (28-8) scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to sweep their series and knock out the state's ninth-ranked 4A team.

Ashley Dumoulin led off the sixth with a triple and scored on a groundout to tie the score, 5-5. Three straight singles gave Byron Nelson a 6-5 lead.

Forney 12, Pinkston 1: A day after scoring 10 runs in the first inning, Forney scored nine times in the first en route to a two-game sweep.

Frisco 12, Hillcrest 0: Alex MacGrandle and Brianna Alvarado went 3-for-3, and Chloe Costa threw a two-hit shutout as Frisco (26-8) won Game 1.

Lovejoy 7, Whitehouse 2: Stephen F. Austin signee Brittany Lewis was 3-for-4 with a grand slam and four RBIs as Lovejoy (28-7) swept its series. Jaclyn Willis doubled twice and drove in a run.

Ennis 12, Royse City 2: Riley Fira homered and had five RBIs as the state's third-ranked 4A team won Game 1.

Mansfield Legacy 10-8, Hallsville 4-3: Legacy won twice Friday to sweep its series. Legacy scored eight runs in the bottom of the sixth in its 10-4 win in Game 1.
