Forney allows 14 hits, falls in Class 4A softball state semifinals
AUSTIN — In a marquee power showdown between Forney’s Brooke McCarroll and Montgomery’s Devon Tunning, Friday’s Class 4A state semifinal was decided by the little things Montgomery did to beat Forney, 11-3, at McCombs Field.
Tunning, who has committed to the University of Texas, had three hits and four RBIs to help Montgomery (34-6) advance to Saturday’s championship game in its first trip to the state tournament. But her teammates did what they had to do.
Montgomery pounded out 14 hits, did not commit an error, and pitchers Katelyn Sanders (22-4) and Morgan Skinner scattered nine hits. Forney (32-8-2), last year’s 4A state runner-up, made three errors, and each contributed to runs.
Montgomery scored in each of the first four innings. That included three runs in the third and five runs in the fourth.
“The big innings made the difference today,” Forney coach Eric Montgomery said. “We made some mistakes in the field, and Montgomery was able to take advantage. The girls never stopped fighting, but we could never regain the momentum we needed after Montgomery got its big lead.”
Montgomery tied the score, 1-1, in the bottom of the first on an RBI double by Ashley Webb. Montgomery took a 2-1 lead in the second as Bailey Watson’s sacrifice fly to deep left field plated Malloree Schurr, who had doubled and advanced to third on a single by Carly Holder.
McCarroll flexed her muscle when she blasted a home run over the center field fence to knot the score at 2-2 in the top of the third. The big hit — McCarroll’s 16th homer of the season and 31st in the last two seasons — came two pitches after Sanders was called for an illegal pitch on a lineout that would have ended the inning. McCarroll finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
In the third, Tunning ripped a two-run triple to the right-center field gap and scored on a single by Holder to give Montgomery a 5-2 lead. Montgomery increased its lead to 10-2 in the fourth, sending 10 batters to the plate.
Tunning’s second triple drove home two runs, and Webb followed with an RBI single. After Montgomery loaded the bases with one out, a fielder’s choice grounder by Holder and a sacrifice fly by Watson added two more runs.
