Softball roundup: Frisco Wakeland defeats Ennis, 3-2, on an obstruction call
MANSFIELD — Frisco Wakeland scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning on an obstruction call to upend Ennis, 3-2, in Game 1 of a best-of-3 Class 4A Region II semifinal series Thursday.
Haley Hicks led off the bottom of the seventh with a double for Wakeland. After a strikeout, Brittany Gehle walked, putting runners on first and second. Emily Acuna hit a roller that got through the Ennis shortstop’s legs. Hicks was thrown out at the plate.
However, the third base umpire ruled that the Ennis third baseman interfered with Hicks by being in the baseline. Hicks had made contact with the third baseman after she rounded third. After the umpires huddled, the ruling stood and Wakeland, ranked 13th in the state in 4A, came away with the win over the state’s No. 1-ranked team.
Ennis had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the first with a pair of walks, an error and a sacrifice fly by Ashley Deutsch.
Wakeland rallied to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth. Hannah Newcomb singled to left field, then stole second base. Monika Reichhardt’s single to center field scored Newcomb with the tying run, with Reichhardt advancing to second on a throwing error. Jordan Swanner followed with a go-ahead RBI single.
In the top of the fifth, Ennis answered. A one-out walk to Kayla Prachyl, and an infield single by Shelby Pruitt put runners on first and second. Courtlyn Benitez’s run-scoring single, following a fielder’s choice, tied the score, 2-2.
Game 2 will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Mansfield Legacy.
Paris North Lamar 2, Pilot Point 0: Lauren Coursey hit a two-run home run with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning as North Lamar won Game 1 of a best-of-3 Class 3A Region II semifinal series at Prosper. Pilot Point pitcher Skylar Cagle threw a complete game and had four strikeouts.
