Softball playoffs: Plano sweeps Weatherford; Wakeland ousted

ARLINGTON — Plano pitcher Kat Batey wasn’t invincible Friday night against Weatherford, but she was good enough.

After pitching a shutout and striking out 13 on Thursday, Batey led Plano to a 6-2 victory Friday that completed a two-game sweep of the Class 5A Region I semifinal softball series.

Plano (37-4), the No. 5 team in the USA Today/National Fastpitch Coaches Association national rankings, scored twice in the third to take a 2-1 lead. After Plano loaded the bases with no outs, MacKenzie Velasquez hit a two-run single.

Plano extended its lead in the fifth as Ashley McDowell hit a double and Batey blasted a two-run homer over the fence in left. Jill Holub finished off Weatherford with a two-run homer in the top of the seventh.

Forney 12, Frisco Wakeland 3: Krista Williams’ two-run single capped a six-run, seven-hit second inning as Forney completed a two-game sweep of a Class 4A Region II semifinal series.

Hillary Steed hit a two-run home run and had three RBIs for Forney (34-7), and Rylie Chappell added a two-run double. Wakeland, the nation’s 13th-ranked team, finished 33-5.
