Softball playoffs: Forney shuts down Wakeland; Plano aces Weatherford
PLANO -- Hillary Steed finished 3-for-3 with three RBIs and two doubles, and Macie Tillery pitched a four-hitter as Forney defeated Frisco Wakeland, 5-1, to open a Class 4A Region II semifinal series Thursday at Plano West.
Wakeland loaded the bases in the seventh with two outs when Jaime Ohm dropped a slap single over first base. However, Tillery got the next hitter to fly out to right to end the game.
Forney (33-7) broke a 1-1 tie in the third on Steed's two-run two-out double after tying the game in the second on her RBI single.
Darian Dunn hit an RBI double in the first inning to score Brittany Gehle for Wakeland (33-4), which then went hitless off Tillery until Dunn doubled again in the sixth. In between, Tillery retired 14-of-17 batters, allowing only three walks and getting three of her four strikeouts during the game.
Brooke McCarroll added a two-run single in the sixth for Forney. Taylor LeFlore joined Laura Mabary with a double and Krista Williams with two hits. Jasmine Lusk walked three times and Taylor Penn also singled.
Defensively, Wakeland catcher Tess Soefje picked off two runners in the fifth. Ohm also singled twice for Wakeland.
Plano 1, Weatherford 0: Weatherford ace Jordan Wallace may have met her match.
After going undefeated during district play and sweeping their way into the Class 5A Region I semifinals, Wallace and her teammates ran into the brilliant pitching of Plano’s Kat Batey on Thursday night. Batey struck out 13 and gave up just four hits to lead Plano to a 1-0 win in Game 1 of the best-of-3 series in Arlington.
“I can’t remember anyone this year that we struggled with like that,” Weatherford coach Ty Comstock said. “We had four hits, but we didn’t hit the ball sharply all night. We didn’t want to give her anything — we wanted to make her throw something we wanted to hit, and we didn’t do that at times.”
Game 2 is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday at UT-Arlington, weather permitting.
The third inning made the difference for Plano (36-4), the No. 5 team in the USA Today/National Fastpitch Coaches Association national rankings.
Katie Hart led off the inning with a double, and Plano loaded the bases on consecutive errors by Weatherford (23-10). Wallace nearly worked her way out of the jam after forcing a flyout, but a wild pitch scored Hart from third, giving Plano the only run it would need.
Coming off a 4-1 win against Odessa Permian in which she struck out 14 and hit a grand slam, Wallace was nearly as impressive Thursday. She struck out 11 and allowed only three hits.
But against Batey, Weatherford got only one hit that left the infield. The closest Weatherford came to scoring was in the fourth, when it put two runners on base. But Batey quickly shot down the threat, striking out the side.
Celina 7, Henderson 2: Shelby Carter went 2-for-4 with two home runs and four RBIs to lead Celina to victory in Game 1 of a best-of-3 Class 3A Region II semifinal series.
Lindsie Knowles tripled twice for Celina and finished 3-for-4 with an RBI, and Katelyn Drummond pitched a four-hitter. Game 2 is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday at North Forney.
