Forney tops Royse City to sweep softball series in two games

FORNEY -- Forney left nine runners stranded before pushing the winning run across in its last at-bat for a 2-1 walk-off win against Royse City on Friday, completing a two-game sweep of the best-of-3 Class 4A Region II quarterfinal softball playoff series. The eighth-inning heroics came on a two-out RBI single by Rylie Chappell into left field on an 0-1 pitch around her eyes.
“I knew she was going to throw rise [ball], and I just went with it,” Chappell said.

The winning rally was started by catcher Krista Williams whose sky-high popup in front of home plate found the dirt for an infield single, marking her fourth hit of the night.

“That was one of the best hitting displays I have ever seen against a pitcher of that caliber,” Forney coach Eric Montgomery said.

After a rocky 29-pitch first inning, Forney starter Macie Tillery settled in and went the full eight, striking out eight Royse City batters.

“Macie had a little more gas tonight and when she made it through that ugly first, she really didn't give up but a few hits,” Montgomery said.

Royse City starter Alicia Pille, a Kansas signee, also pitched a complete game and notched eight strikeouts.
