Softball playoff roundup: Ace returns as Hebron sweeps Denton Guyer
All-state pitcher Heather Stearns returned after missing Friday’s game with an illness and pitched a complete-game six-hitter Saturday to help Hebron beat Denton Guyer, 4-1, and complete a two-game sweep of a best-of-3 Class 5A first-round playoff series.
Stearns, a junior who has committed to Baylor, gave up a run in the second inning but shut out Guyer (23-8) — the state’s 24th-ranked team — the rest of the way. Hebron (26-10-1) advanced to play Mansfield Legacy.
Hebron, the No. 3 seed from District 8-5A, has picked up right where it left off in the playoffs a year ago. In 2010, Hebron was the No. 4 seed from its district and advanced all the way to the 5A state semifinals. Guyer was a 4A state semifinalist last season before moving up to 5A.
Hebron jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Chelsea Herndon led off with a double and scored on a double by Whitney Burt. Guyer responded in the top of the second with an RBI single by Allie Oldham, but Hebron took the lead for good in the bottom half of the inning on a two-out, RBI single by Heather Bailey.
