Softball playoff roundup: Hebron beats Guyer in opener

Nationally ranked Plano wins Game 1; Legacy beats Nimitz

Chelsea Herndon pitched a complete-game six-hitter filling in for all-state pitcher Heather Stearns, and Hebron beat Denton Guyer, 6-2, on Friday in Game 1 of a best-of-3 Class 5A first-round playoff series.

Stearns, a junior who has committed to Baylor, was sick. Guyer (23-7) is ranked 24th in the state, while Hebron (25-10-1) is the No. 3 seed from District 8-5A.

Plano 2, Keller Central 0: Kat Batey (30-3) pitched a three-hit shutout and struck out eight, and Kristen Miles was 2-for-4 as 8-5A champion Plano (31-3) won the opener of a best-of-3 series. Plano is ranked second in the state and No. 6 nationally.

Mansfield Legacy 4, Irving Nimitz 2: Baylee Gray pitched a five-hitter as Legacy (16-12) — the No. 4 seed from District 5-5A — beat 6-5A champion Nimitz in Game 1 of a best-of-3 series. Nimitz is ranked 17th in the state.

Midlothian 3, Richland 2: Delaney Wayland hit an inside-the-park home run in the bottom of the seventh to win the best-of-3 opener. Megan Spence struck out 12 for Midlothian (21-7).

Flower Mound Marcus 9, Southlake Carroll 0: Hannah Null threw a two-hit shutout as the state's 12th-ranked team won Game 1.

South Grand Prairie 2, Hurst L.D. Bell 0: Shelby Alexander threw a four-hitter for the state's No. 21 team in Game 1.

Garland 10, Richardson Berkner 0: Kelly Walton pitched a one-hit shutout, and Heather Wilson and Michaela Hopkins homered as Garland won a one-game playoff.

Class 4A

Frisco Wakeland 7, McKinney North 1: Monika Reichhardt was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, and Hannah Newcomb allowed only one run to improve to 27-3 as Wakeland (29-3) opened the best-of-3 series with a victory. Wakeland is ranked fifth in the state and No. 21 nationally.

Frisco Centennial 9, McKinney 4: The state's 13th-ranked team had nine hits in Game 1.

Denton Ryan 19, Plainview 2: Sara Quintanar was 4-for-4 with three doubles, a triple and five RBIs, and Micah Foutch went 3-for-4 with four RBIs as Ryan (25-8) won Game 1.

Seagoville 16, Bryan Adams 1: Delany Fondren and Keeneisha Bynum each had three hits as Seagoville won a one-game playoff.

Fort Worth Christian 7, Dallas Christian 0: Dayton signee Kayla English pitched a perfect game for Fort Worth Christian in the TAPPS 4A area-round game and moved into second place on the state's career strikeout list. English struck out 16 on Friday, giving her 1,589 strikeouts in her career. She passed former Fort Bend Baptist and current University of Texas pitcher Rachel Fox, who had 1,585. Former Justin Northwest star Brittany Barnhill, who started her college career at Texas and now plays for Mississippi, holds the state record with 1,715 career strikeouts.
