Rockwall-Heath star tandem shines in series win over Waxahachie
Hernandez, Thompson combine for 13 RBIs in three-game series win
WAXAHACHIE — All the time, Rockwall-Heath coach Greg Harvey quotes a familiar refrain to his players. He wants them to step up, so he tells them that the best players must rise to the top in big situations.
The two players known as Rockwall-Heath’s best are Jovan Hernandez and Jake Thompson, and after their team won Game 3 of its 4A regional semifinal series against Waxahachie, 5-3, it was apparent that they take Harvey’s words to heart.
The scores for the three-game series were 9-0 Rockwall-Heath on Thursday, 4-2 Waxahachie on Saturday and 5-3 Rockwall-Heath on Saturday. Of the team’s 16 runs, Hernandez and Thompson accounted for 13.
Hernandez had two three-run home runs and a two-run single. Thompson had a three-run home run and a two-run home run.
“If one of us doesn’t do it, the guy behind us will,” Thompson said.
In Thompson’s case, the guy behind him in the lineup is Hernandez. In the fifth inning of Game 3, his team trailing 2-1, Thompson walked. Hernandez followed with a three-run home run, giving Rockwall-Heath the lead for good.
“A lot of kids, especially high school-age kids, will crumble under pressure like that,” Harvey said. “Those guys, they get better.”
Waxahachie, which rallied behind pitcher Kyle McLeroy’s five-hitter in the Game 2 victory, added a third run in the fifth. It couldn’t muster any offense in the sixth and seventh.
Thompson pitched those innings, coming through at the most vital of times.
