Softball roundup: Plano West rallies to eliminate Plano; Rockwall homer ends McKinney Boyd

Abilene Christian signee Holly Neese went 2-for-5 with four RBIs as Plano West rallied from an early two-run deficit to beat Plano, 9-5, in the third game of a best-of-3 Class 5A Region II quarterfinal series Saturday.

Plano, the fourth-place team from District 10-5A, scored four runs in the bottom of the third to take a 4-2 lead over 10-5A co-champion Plano West. But Plano West rallied with one run in the fourth and five runs in the fifth to go ahead 8-4.

An RBI double by Alyson Vick tied the score at 4, and Sierra Lange and Margo Beck drew back-to-back bases-loaded walks to give Plano West a 6-4 lead. Neese completed the big inning with a two-run double.

Plano West won Game 2 of the series, 3-1, earlier Saturday as Brinkley Castro was 2-for-2 with two RBIs, and Marissa Butler threw a six-hitter. Butler pitched back-to-back complete games Saturday.

Rockwall 4, McKinney Boyd 1

Dani Greenlee hit a two-run homer during a three-run fifth inning as Rockwall beat McKinney Boyd in Game 3 of the 5A Region II quarterfinal series. Rockwall advanced to play Kingwood, last season’s 5A state runner-up.

Kayla Vandergriff — pitching for just the second time this season and making her first start of the year — helped Rockwall avenge last year’s third-round playoff loss to Boyd (25-6-2). Vandergriff held the District 10-5A co-champion to one run, giving up five hits and four walks.

Rockwall (26-5-1), the 12-5A co-champion, got two runs from Jocelyn Myers. Shelbi Court was 1-for-2 with an RBI.

Richland 7-12, Midland 1-11

Richland scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth — all with two outs — to advance with a wild 12-11 win in Game 3 of a 5A Region I quarterfinal series.

Richland led 7-2 after three innings, but Midland scored six runs in the top of the sixth to go ahead 11-9. Richland’s first two hitters in the bottom of the sixth were retired before six straight batters reached safely.

Maddie McBride drove in the winning run for Richland (27-8) with an RBI single after the state’s sixth-ranked 5A team had scored runs on a passed ball and error. McBride was 4-for-5 with four RBIs, and Lauren Oatman was 5-for-5 with four runs and two RBIs.

Nyka Wood homered, had two RBIs and scored two runs Richland won Game 2 of the series, 7-1, earlier Saturday.

Flower Mound 14, Hebron 5

Wichita State pledge Mauri Jamele hit two home runs, and Texas Tech pledge Annelise Oswalt and Alex Jennings also homered as District 5-5A champion Flower Mound swept 5-5A No. 4 seed Hebron in a 5A Region I quarterfinal series.

Flower Mound (29-6-1), ranked third in the state in 5A, advanced to play No. 10 Lubbock Coronado. Jamele was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs, and Jennings and LSU pledge Sydney Springfield had three RBIs.

Lubbock Coronado 11-4, Keller 0-3

Coronado scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to win Game 3, 4-3, and take the 5A Region I quarterfinal series, two games to one. Coronado beat Keller, 11-0, in Game 2 earlier Saturday to tie the series.

Aledo 9, Denton Guyer 4

Aledo scored five runs over the final three innings to break a 4-4 tie on its way to sweeping the 4A Region I quarterfinal series. Aledo, which reached the state semifinals last season, ended Guyer’s season for the second year in a row.

Aledo turned two inning-ending double plays. Guyer could not take advantage of nine hits and five walks.

Ennis 4, Texarkana Texas High 0

Taylor Maliska threw a one-hit shutout, and Tulsa pledge Julia Hollingsworth hit a two-run triple and also doubled and scored a run as the state’s sixth-ranked 4A team swept its series. Ennis (34-5) will play Mesquite Poteet in the Region II semis.

Hallsville 6, Wylie 5

Hallsville, ranked second in the state in 4A, swept the series and advanced to face North Forney in the Region II semifinals.
