Pair of seven-run innings send Rockwall past Plano in first of three-game series

UNIVERSITY PARK — Rockwall put together a pair of seven-run innings to defeat Plano, 14-9, and overcome five- and two-run deficits in Game 1 of a Class 5A regional quarterfinal playoff series at Highland Park’s Scotland Yard.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Rockwall scored seven runs on four hits.

It entered the inning trailing, 9-7. Senior second baseman Skyler Bean started the rally with a solo home run to left, making it 9-8. The game-tying run came on a throwing error, and the go-ahead run scored on a bases-loaded walk. Another error and four walks in the inning helped the rally. Right fielder Nick Lutzel singled in the final run, the only other RBI hit of the inning.

Rockwall (30-6) trailed for the first time in the playoffs, but it still managed to remain undefeated through four playoff matchups.

Rockwall had a seven-run third inning to take a 7-5 lead. Rockwall got an RBI double by left fielder Cole Ballew, a two-run double by center fielder Kendall Coleman and a three-run double by shortstop Dustin Angiel.

Plano (23-15) needed a three-run fourth inning to retake the lead, 8-7. After getting an RBI single from sophomore Mitchell Hansen, Plano got two runs on a fielder’s choice and a throwing error. Plano led 9-7 in the top of the sixth when Hansen singled in another run. Speedy center fielder Cody Farhat was on second base and breaking for third on a steal attempt when Hansen lined a single to left

Plano had taken a 5-0 lead in the second inning with a high-hop double by Brad Hoeler, a bunt single by Michael Crawford, an RBI single by Farhat and a two-run single by shortstop Ryan Robertson up the middle.
