Softball playoffs: Keller miscues open door for Plano
DENTON — Plano took advantage of a pair of two-out Keller errors to score five unearned runs in the top of the fourth inning and held on for a 5-4 win in the opener of their best-of-3 Class 5A Region I final softball playoff series at Pioneer Field on the campus of Texas Woman’s University.
Trailing 3-0, Plano (38-4) got singles from Jill Holub and Tori Seasor with two outs. Holub scored when Katie Hart’s fly ball to right was dropped for an error.
Chelsea Sartor and Kristen Miles followed with run-scoring singles, and two more runs scored on another Keller error and a single by MacKenzie Velasquez.
Up to that point, Keller (31-7-1) had been in total control. Starter Katie Ramsay had limited Plano to one hit — Kristen Miles’ third-inning single — while driving in a run with a third-inning double.
Bailee Kaderka also had a run-scoring double for Keller in the third, along with a first-inning, RBI single. Tori Charters drove in the other Keller run with an RBI single in the fifth.
Autumn Suydam’s third single of the game gave Keller the makings of a rally leading off the bottom of the seventh, but winning pitcher Kat Batey got fly-ball outs from the next three batters to end the game.
Game 2 is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Forney 5, Frisco Centennial 1: In Forney, great starting pitching and the long ball helped Forney defeat Frisco Centennial in Game 1 of their best-of-3 Class 4A Region II final series at North Forney High School.
Macie Tillery pitched a five-hitter to lead Forney. Centennial recorded two hits in the first six innings before scoring in its final at-bat.
Krista Williams and Taylor LeFlore each had home runs as Forney took a 3-0 early lead. Forney scored two more in the fifth inning on an RBI triple by Jasmine Lusk and a run-scoring single by LeFlore.
Centennial made it interesting in the top of seventh.
Mikayla Nairn hit an RBI single to cut the deficit to 5-1, and Centennial had runners on second and third with no outs.
Tillery was able to get Ashlyn Mitchell to pop up for the first out. Mackenzie Jones was called out for being in the path of the third baseman on a routine popout. Tillery then got a strikeout to end the game.
Celina 10, Lovejoy 5: In Allen, Lindsie Knowles and Shelby Carter combined for seven hits and had three RBIs apiece as Celina overcame seven errors to defeat Lovejoy, 10-5, to open the Class 3A Region II final at Allen High School.
Knowles tripled to go 4-for-5, and Shelby Carter doubled and homered to go 3-for-5 for Celina (33-6-3), which resumes the series tonight at 7 p.m. at Allen.
Carter’s two-run homer over the left field fence capped a four-run seventh for Celina, which committed all its miscues between the fourth and sixth to help Lovejoy (28-7) stay in the game.
