UIL state golf roundup: Highland Park's Scheffler builds five-shot lead with 66; Houston, Szeryk pace Allen girls to 5A lead
AUSTIN — Highland Park’s Scottie Scheffler, the two-time defending champion, carded the only sub-par score during the first day of the Class 4A state tournament at the University of Texas Golf Club.
Scheffler finished with a 5-under 66, while only one other player hit par in the 72-golfer field. Frisco’s Brandon Smith came close, carding a 1-over-par 72.
“I just wanted to get off to a good start,” Scheffler said. “It feels pretty comfortable today. I’m a little tired, but I’ll go back to the hotel and rest up for tomorrow.”
Scheffler, who has committed to Texas, was the only golfer to master his future home course.
The 6,828-yard course was unforgiving for players missing fairways, and multiple coaches said the wind conditions changed completely from practice rounds Friday and Saturday.
Highland Park, the defending champions, had the second-best score Monday with a 296. Charlie Click (76), Cash Carter (76), Drake Turnbull (78), and Jake Potter (78) put the Scots in a good position catch Austin Vandegrift, which finished the first day with a 291 team score, and practices at the University of Texas Golf Club regularly.
While Scheffler has a big lead on the field in the individual championship race, three other area teams, led by Denton Guyer, have a chance to reach the medal stand Tuesday.
Guyer finished the first day with a team score of 306, 15 strokes off the lead. Garret Underwood led Guyer with a 73. Jeremiah Earle (77), Connor Ross (79), and Brady Hanley (77) also played well for Guyer, which coach Roddy Adams said is aiming for a team score of 289 on Tuesday.
“This was the second time we played this course after one practice round, so we were pretty naive of what to expect,” Adams said. “But they’re taking notes and doing their homework. If we can hit that goal tomorrow, we’ll be pretty happy, and possibly [be] in contention to win.”
Mansfield Legacy carded a team score of 311 and sat in sixth place, led by Kevin Childs (75). Hayden Springer’s 74 led the way for Trophy Club Byron Nelson, which is seventh after a 314.
Allen, Coppell girls 1-2: The Allen and Coppell girls are first and second Class 5A. Co-leader Julie Houston shot a 1-under 69 to pace Allen, which opened with a 288. Senior Maddie Szeryk was third with a 70. Jordy LaBarbera shot a 73.
Chairthra Katamneni led Coppell with a 73, which is 15 shots behind.
Southlake Carroll boys second in 5A: Southlake Carroll Black carded a first-day score of 295 at the Onion Creek Club and is in second, 11 shots behind Austin Westlake, which fired a 4-over team score of 284.
Mason Greenberg had a 2-over 72 to lead the Dragons, who qualified two teams. Southlake Carroll Green shot a 302, led by Trent Hill’s 72.
Flower Mound Marcus and Plano West each recorded team scores of 305, sticking within striking distance of a top-three finish.
Briefly: In Class 4A, Cheyenne Knight of Aledo has a two-shot lead after shooting a 74. Aledo is second, six shots behind Huntsville. Brielle Ward of Frisco Wakeland is tied for third with a 77. Frisco Liberty’s Devin Edwards is one shot back.
