Scots beat SA Alamo Heights, 10-3, and will face Montgomery for title
MONTGOMERY — The weather tried its best to alter Highland Park’s 127-match win streak before and during Tuesday’s Class 4A semifinal at the UIL team tennis state tournament.
Originally scheduled for Monday in College Station, Highland Park took the courts Tuesday afternoon in Montgomery and beat San Antonio Alamo Heights, 10-3, to extend its winning streak to 128 matches.
The Scots (21-0) jumped out to a 6-1 lead after doubles play, winning all three girls matches, the mixed doubles match and two of three in boys doubles. With momentum on Highland Park’s side, the rain once again forced a delay.
“Coming out of the doubles up 6-1 we had a tremendous amount of momentum,” Highland Park coach Dan Holden said. “We had four girls matches on that we were handling pretty easily at the time. We were rolling pretty well then Mother Nature derailed us a little bit.”
The teams were moved to two covered courts during the delay, where Highland Park freshman Elizabeth Tedford beat Alamo Heights senior Marie Lutz in a 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (3) thriller.
“Elizabeth Tedford in the singles shut them down,” Holden said. “That would have been a very big match for Alamo Heights to win but she really did a great job in that tie breaker. [Lutz] was playing lights out. She is a senior and gave us her best shot. Elizabeth, a freshman, came in and outplayed her.”
The Scots clinched the match when Connor LaFavre defeated Jonah Candelario, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Highland Park will play the state championship match Wednesday at Baylor’s Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center at a time to be determined. The Scots will be looking for their 10th state title in 11 years and will take on Montgomery (24-2).
“It’s always good in the semis to have a tough test,” Holden said. “It sharpened our armor for tomorrow.”
