St. Mark’s seniors claim fourth SPC boys lacrosse title, beating ESD, 16-9
AUSTIN — When St. Mark’s lost to Episcopal School of Dallas at home earlier in the season, the Lions watched as the Eagles stormed their field.
St. Mark’s used tape of the celebration to fuel its fire Saturday morning before the Southwest Preparatory Conference Division I boys lacrosse championship match.
“We had the videotape of the celebration and watched it before the game,” sophomore Michael Fletcher said. “We wanted revenge.”
They got it. St. Mark’s routed Episcopal, 16-9, to give its senior class four titles. The Lions have won nine of the last 10 years.
The game was close for half a quarter, but then the Lions began to pull away. Two goals in a 30-second span widened the margin to 5-2 at the end of the first quarter. By halftime, St. Mark’s (14-3) was up, 10-3, thanks in part to two goals each from junior attackman Tommy Addy and senior midfielder Danny Koudelka.
Playing desperately and aggressively, the Eagles rallied in the fourth quarter, stringing together four goals to cut their deficit to four. St. Mark’s responded, with Koudelka, Addy and Fletcher each scoring in a three-minute span.
“Another championship,” Koudelka said. “It feels good to win this for our school.”
Goalie Chris Roach finished with 12 saves. Fletcher was the high scorer, with three goals and four assists. Riley Graham controlled 19 of 27 faceoffs and had 12 groundballs.
