UIL state wrestling meet: Allen aims at seven boys titles
D-FW schools are dominant entering 5A, 4A boys finals
AUSTIN — The performance by the power-packed and balanced Allen boys team during the second of three days of competition in the Class 5A bracket of the UIL state wrestling tournament left just two questions to answer: How many individual titles would the Eagles win, and by how much would Allen capture the team title?
In the 4A boys event, Frisco sent three athletes to the finals and enters the final day in second place, seven points behind Canyon Randall.
Allen, which has won three consecutive team state championships, flexed its proverbial muscles Friday at the Delco Center and placed a record seven wrestlers into the final matches, making up a quarter of those left in the boys 5A competition. A fourth title all but assured, the Allen boys slept Friday night with the goal of going undefeated in the finals.
After five of the six rounds in the boys 5A team event, Allen had racked up a record 219.5 points, three times as many as second-place El Paso Franklin (73).
D-FW muscle: Five of the 5A finals will be all-Dallas-Fort Worth battles.
At 106 pounds, Allen’s Howard Smith will grapple with Alex Minor of McKinney Boyd; Jordan Hall of South Grand Prairie and Dammion Heard of Keller Fossil Ridge will decide the 113-pound title; Oliver Pierce of Allen will battle Rafay Ali of Arlington Bowie at 152 pounds; Blake Andrews of Grapevine and Matt Meyer of Allen will square off at 182 pounds; and Daniel Roland of Rockwall will be on the mat against Nick Cobb of Allen at 195 pounds.
Seventeen of the 28 competitors in the boys Class 5A final are from high schools in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Ten of the 28 remaining wrestlers in the boys Class 4A meet are from the area.
Byron Nelson’s Collins digs deep: One of the most entertaining matches of the boys 4A competition was when Kody Collins of Trophy Club Byron Nelson outlasted Dripping Springs’ Jordan Ribera, 12-11, to earn a finals berth at 152 pounds.
Both wrestlers had to call timeouts for injuries, but Collins needed his with 18 seconds remaining in the third, and final, two-minute period. He almost quit because he couldn’t raise his right arm above his waist but found a way to fend off a frantic Ribera to win.
