State tennis notebook: Highland Park's dominant mixed doubles team takes state crown
LAKEWAY, Texas — First-time mixed doubles state champion Connor LaFavre of Highland Park summed up his season in a simple statement after donning the gold medal with partner Margo Taylor.
“I am so stoked, this is incredible,” LaFavre said after teaming with Taylor to win the Class 4A championship in decisive fashion at Lakeway World of Tennis.
LaFavre and Taylor broke serve five times and defeated Jared and Briana Fellows of Boerne Champion, 6-1, 6-1.
“This was the first season I have played mixed doubles, and it was really great,” said LaFavre, a sophomore making his first trip to the state tournament. “It is exciting to be part of the program and to win the gold medal.”
The other two Highland Park doubles teams did not fare as well. Both the boys and girls doubles teams were matched against opponents from Austin Lake Travis, a school Highland Park defeated in the team tennis state championships in November.
The Highland Park girls duo of Sarah Cannon and Alin Piranian lost to Courtney Schulte and Ryan Brown, 7-5, 6-4. The Highland Park boys doubles team of Luke Stainback and Hunter Holman fell to Lake Travis’ Oliver Seifert and Sam Laudon, 6-4, 6-3.
McKinney North’s Jordan Hart won the 4A boys singles final, 5-7, 7-6 (7-1), 6-1, by using a tremendous ground game and strong defense to overcome a fast start and monstrous serve by defending state champion Austin Mayo of Lake Travis.
“I just stayed with him and knew that I could outlast him, but I had to stay in the match,” Hart said.
With a big southpaw serve, Mayo notched seven aces. But playing on a hot day, Hart’s athleticism prevailed.
Hart was able to adjust to the velocity and accuracy of Mayo’s serve and also used his volley game as a weapon.
