Plano West needs 3 OTs to top Lewisville as 5A powers put on a show
LEWISVILLE — In their final tuneup for district play, Plano West and Lewisville wanted a battle that would prepare them for the games that really matter. On Friday, the teams got just what they wanted — in a game that certainly felt like it mattered.
Avery Johnson Jr. scored nine of his 18 points in the third overtime as Plano West pulled away for a 79-73 victory in a matchup of two of the area’s best teams.
“We’ve got to work on some things, but we’ll take it,” Plano West coach Anthony Morgan said. “There was no quit in Lewisville. They truly are the Fighting Farmers.”
D.J. Hogg scored 32 points for Plano West (11-5), which led by 10 entering the fourth quarter before Lewisville (14-3) rallied to send the game to overtime on a 15-footer by Marcus Ash with three seconds left.
Johnson scored on a layup with seven seconds remaining in the second overtime to give Plano West a 64-62 lead. But Lewisville guard Marquis Williams answered with a layup just before the buzzer to send it to a third overtime.
Hogg hit his sixth 3-pointer of the game to open the third overtime. His shooting helped offset the 27-point night Lewisville guard Diamante Langston and Plano West’s struggles at the free-throw line. The Wolves made just 14 of 26 attempts.
Lewisville (District 5-5A) and Plano West (10-5A) each open district play next Friday. Morgan said that Plano West guard Mickey Mitchell, a junior who is orally committed to Ohio State and hasn’t played for a month because of injury, is expected to be back in the lineup next Friday.
