Mansfield holds on to defeat SGP, 24-22
MANSFIELD - Mansfield was challenged by South Grand Prairie in the first half Friday night at R.L. Anderson Stadium and admittedly did not have a response.
But the Tigers answered every challenge in the second half and were able to escape with a 24-22 victory after a failed two-point conversion attempt by South Grand Prairie in the final minutes.
"We just didn't have the motivation to do what we had to do," Mansfield quarterback Jerod Evans said of the first half. "And it's like coach said - third quarter, fourth quarter is ours. We're going to put our will on them."
Evans helped Mansfield (5-0, 2-0 District 5-5A) erase a six-point halftime deficit by throwing both of his touchdown passes in the second half, including a hitch-and-go to Gary Davis for a 34-yard touchdown in the third quarter.
But the biggest play for Mansfield came on defense, when Chad Whitener intercepted a South Grand Prairie pass with the Tigers clinging to a 21-16 lead in the fourth quarter.
South Grand Prairie (3-2, 1-1) held Mansfield to a field goal after the turnover and had a chance to tie after Jared Johnson hit wide-open Louis Dailey for a 27-yard TD with 1:35 left.
But the Warriors could not come up with a diving catch in the end zone on the two-point conversion try.
