Kimball's quick start holds up in 23-14 win over SOC
Joshua Matthews pounced on a fumble in the end zone for the only points in the second half as Kimball outlasted South Oak Cliff, 23-14, Friday night at John Kincaide Stadium.
Kimball (4-1, 2-0 District 11-4A) ran off to a 16-0 lead before South Oak Cliff (4-1, 1-1) scored two touchdowns to narrow the gap by halftime.
Kimball won despite rushing for 23 yards.
Matthews' fumble recovery came with 6:15 left in the game with South Oak Cliff was backed up to its 9-yard line.
Quarterback Semaj Riley lost the ball after he was chased back into the end zone and hit there.
South Oak Cliff was called for 11 penalties for 108 yards in its first loss of the season.
Kimball quarterback Traveon Thibodeaux completed 18 of 28 passes for 199 yards and a touchdown - a 69-yard strike to Xzavier Alexander with 6:46 left in the second quarter.
Riley scored two touchdowns for South Oak Cliff and completed 19 of 39 pass attempts for 222 yards with three interceptions.
Each team turned the ball over twice in the first half. South Oak Cliff's Albert Edwards and Cameron Brown recovered fumbles, and Austin Franklin and Zachary Mayes intercepted Riley.
But only Brown's fumble recovery for with three minutes left in the first half resulted in points. Riley scored on a 10-yard run two minutes after Kimball's fumble.
