Jesuit can't stop Lake Highlands rushing attack
DeVonte Sunwenghan rushed for 191 yards and four touchdowns to lead Lake Highlands to a 29-20 win, spoiling Jesuit's homecoming in the first game played at the new Jesuit Stadium.
Lake Highlands (6-2, 5-0 in District 9-5A) clinched a playoff berth with the victory. Lake Highlands will play Skyline for a share of the district title next week.
Sunwenghan's final touchdown, a 17-yard run with two minutes left, helped put away Jesuit (4-4, 3-2). The extra point by Mitchell Henton gave Lake Highlands a two-score lead.
Jesuit pulled within two points of Lake Highlands with 6:56 left when Mike Savage hit Jake Oliver with a three-yard touchdown pass to make it 22-20. The two-point conversion attempt failed.
Lake Highlands then went on an 11-play drive for the clinching score.
Sunwenghan became the primary option for Lake Highlands because running back Desmond Roland, one of the area's top 5A rushers, did not play because of an undisclosed injury.
In addition to 32 rushes, Sunwenghan caught 11 passes for 122 yards.
Jesuit's Savage completed 22 of 40 passes for 207 yards and three touchdowns. Jake Oliver caught 10 passes for 112 yards and a score.
The game was scoreless until Henton kicked a 30-yard field goal with 3:47 left in the half.
After forcing a three-and-out, Lake Highlands scored again when Sunwenghan plowed into the end zone from five yards out. Sunwenghan set up the score three plays earlier with a 25-yard reception.
Jesuit answered just before halftime when Savage rolled right and found Christian Franz in the end zone for a 4-yard score. The extra point cut Lake Highlands' lead to 10-7 with seven seconds left in the half.
